We will move on to Genesis 6 today. The fifth chapter gives the listing of the generations from Adam to Noah. In the sixth chapter, we see where things are leading and great problem that sin has created.

Genesis 6
Now it came about, when men began to multiply on the face of the land, and daughters were born to them, [2] that the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves, whomever they chose. [3] Then the Lord said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years." [4] The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

This is a difficult passage of scripture. It might sound like an R-rated comic book release if we did not know better. Who were these "sons of God" and the "daughters of men"? What were the Nephilim?
Many have debated the meaning of these phrases. We don't want to get lost in the details and miss the main point. This passage is important because it describes a time when the human race was in a freefall. Humanity was becoming more and more wicked. Death was the ongoing punishment.
Many have suggested that the "sons of God" could have been the godly line of Seth and that the daughters of men were the Cainites. But this does not do justice to the terminology or the context. Others view the "sons of God" as angels who cohabited with women on earth. This, however, conflicts with Matthew 22:30.
At the core of this text is hubris-- the proud overstepping of bounds. "The sons of God" were a lusty, powerful lot-- whoever they were. They were striving for fame and fertility. They were probably powerful rulers who were controlled or indwelt by fallen angels. It may be that fallen angels left their habitation and inhabited bodies of human despots and warriors, the mighty ones of the earth.
We know from Ezekiel 28:11-19 and Daniel 10:13 that great kings of the earth have "princes" ruling behind them. Their power is demonic. Kings are described as divine, half-divine, or demigods in other literature. Ancient pagan people revered and worshiped these great leaders. There were mythological traditions attached to kings describing them as the offspring of the gods themselves. Any superhuman individual in a myth, or any mythological or actual giant, would suggest a divine origin among the pagans.
We do not want to miss that these four verses describe how corrupt the world got when hubris was rampant. This is actually an argument against the pagan idea that giants (Nephilim in Numbers 13:32-33) and men of renown (in Genesis 6:4) were of divine origin. Immortality is not somehow achieved by immorality. This was rampant in the beliefs of pagan cultures.
The Canaanite cult included fertility rites involving magic based on the assumption that people were supernaturally affected by an object representing them. The Lord continually warned Israel to resist this because it was utterly false and corrupt.
Scripture refutes pagan beliefs simply by declaring the truth. The sons of God were not divine; they were demon-controlled. Their marrying as many women as they wished was to satisfy their lustful instincts. This may have been the origin of harems. Those they perceived as heroes were actually demon-influenced. They were not god-kings. They may have been perceived as heroes, but they were flesh and died as all humans.
Where is this going? When God judges the world-- as He was about to-- no giant or deity or human has any power against Him.
We live in an Age that looks to heroes who seem to have "superpowers." The truth is a display of the same lustful hubris. We still see powerful world leaders who seem to regard themselves as divine. Not much has changed regarding this lost world and the desperate need for Jesus.

Lord, God. Help me in this world of hero-worship and idols to focus on the true gift of the Savior. May I shine with the light of Jesus into the darkness of this world. In Jesus'name.
