Romans 5

[12] Therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all men, because all sinned‑‑ [13] for before the law was given, sin was in the world. But sin is not taken into account when there is no law. [14] Nevertheless, death reigned from the time of Adam to the time of Moses, even over those who did not sin by breaking a command, as did Adam, who was a pattern of the one to come.

Sin brings death.  Before sin entered into the world, there was no death.  Isn't that a remarkable thought? Life was created by God, not death. Death entered because of sin.  Prior to sin, there was no physical death and no spiritual death, but then came sin.
It was the choice of Adam and Eve to sin. This caused death to enter the picture, and death reigned from Adam to Moses. Death reigned even over those who did not sin by breaking a command.  This is because sin is a condition we inherit and an offense we commit; sin is the sickness and the symptom.
Why is this important?  Unless we understand sin and death, we will not comprehend life. Unless we grasp the power of sin and the reign of death, we will not grasp the gift of grace.
As humans, we have a tendency to toy with sin.  Like moths attracted to a candle, we flit about, attracted to the light. We think that it won't matter how close we fly and that surely the candle does not mean death to us. But by sin, death enters.
When we look in the face of the most attractive and tempting sin, we must remember that we are looking death in the face. The allure of disobedience masks the hideous darkness of death, but it is death just the same.
The truth is that the same lies echo after thousands of generations as did in the Garden: "Did the Lord really say you should not do that..."  "You will not surely die..."  "Perhaps God does not want good things for you..."  "Just take a look.  Just one taste.  It won't hurt this once..." Then comes death.
No one who ever died set out to do so.  Even a person who takes their own life does not set out in the beginning to die. But somewhere along the way, they give in to the reign of death. No, we set out seeking life but we look in all the wrong places and sin with its lies draws us near to the flame and death enters in.
And how do we find life? Find Jesus. He said: I am the way, the truth, and the life.  Are you lost? He is the way. Are you confused? He is the truth. Tired of the reign of death? He is life. The life. Find life. Don't play with death.

Lord, I give thanks that You have revealed Life in Jesus.  Keep me away from the allure of the flame called sin, in Jesus' name.
