Ship Registry is a declaration that a certain vessel will operate under the authority of a specific nation. By flying that flag, the ship is subject to the regulation, inspection, and laws of that nation. But very often the flag flown is what is known as a Flag of Convenience... a flag in name only to gain the benefit of lenient taxation and lax inspections.
