John 1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. [2] He was with God in the beginning.
[3] Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. [4] In him was life, and that life was the light of men. [5] The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.
[10] He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. [11] He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. [12] Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God-- [13] children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband's will, but born of God.
[14] The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Luke's Gospel gives us the story of Jesus through the eyes and heart of Mary. Matthew's Gospel shares with us the view and actions of Joseph. John gives us the divine view-- the view of God Almighty on this day.
It's a big thought to ponder from afar that before anything and everything, there He was; Christ our Savior, Christ our Lord. Not exactly Jesus… yet. But the anointed, saving, wondrous power that would be Jesus once Word became flesh. He was there before it all began.
         Wow.
Not only that, He was part of design and development. Through Him all things were made. All things. Not just the big fancy things but even the littlest of things; blades of grass, worms, fish, geese, and such. In fact, nothing was made without Him. Not. One. Thing.
In Him, the Christ, was Life! Not just biological life but spiritual life, which is the Light to all men. So began the great battle. The great battle is between Light and Darkness, Life and non-life.
Darkness does not understand the Light. The Darkness cannot abide with the Light because the Light fills it up and drives it away. There is no peaceful coexistence between Light and Darkness. The Life-Light blazed its way into the Darkness, and the Darkness couldn't put it out.
The Life-Light of Christ blazes into the Darkness of our lives. Darkness squeals and writhes in opposition, but it is no match for the Life-Light. The Darkness in us does not comprehend. It cannot be rehabilitated. Darkness is not reformed; it is banished, driven out, and replaced with Life-Light. This is what the coming of Christ is all about.
The coming of Jesus is an event that splits time into two pieces. At this moment, when the Life-Light of Christ blazed into the darkness of this world, "God made flesh" took up residence in a tiny village in northern Galilee that hardly anyone noticed.
"The world" did not recognize Him at all! The leaders of the world barely noticed His presence. The power systems of the world charged ahead as if nothing had happened. The wars and recessions and economies of the world plowed ahead, unaware! Even the religious world paid little notice. "His own," the beloved Jewish people, did not receive Him officially, though many received Him individually.
Some did "receive" Him. Some of the "worldly" received Him, and some of "His own" received Him. There was no line of discrimination. All who received Him and who believed in His Name were given the right to become children of God.
These children of God were born of God, born of His Spirit. As we learn later in John's Gospel, they were born from above-- a Spiritual re-birth that is more significant than our physical birth. This comes about by receiving and believing, yet it is entirely initiated by God! The re-birth comes about by faith, trusting in this One and Only sent from the Father.
Little has changed in 2000 years. The world still does not recognize Him. Most leaders barely notice Him. Governments and economies charge ahead. Yet, to those who receive Him and believe in His name, He still gives the right to become children of God.
That is not just good news. That is the best news! Have you received Him? Have you taken the Light into your life? Have you trusted Him by faith that He might give you Spiritual life? Nothing could be more important than allowing the Life-Light to drive the darkness from Your life.
Is the Life-Light of Christ in you? Yes, darkness rebels. It objects and complains of the Life-Light of Christ. But oh, the Glory of this Life as it shines in you!

Dear God, shine in me! Shine in me with the Life-Light of Christ. Shine through me Word of the cosmos. Drive out the darkness! Flood my life with Your Life-Light! Blaze into my life and drive out the darkness. I receive Your Son, Jesus. I believe in His name and the power of His Name to make me whole. Give me New Life. In Jesus' name.
