Mark 14
[43] Just as he was speaking, Judas, one of the Twelve, appeared. With him was a crowd armed with swords and clubs, sent from the chief priests, the teachers of the law, and the elders.
[44] Now the betrayer had arranged a signal with them: "The one I kiss is the man; arrest him and lead him away under guard." [45] Going at once to Jesus, Judas said, "Rabbi!" and kissed him. [46] The men seized Jesus and arrested him.

Betrayed by a kiss. The words reek of anguish. It is one thing to betray. Betraying with a kiss, a sign of affection, a greeting of love and trust is quite another. We would never imagine to do such a thing. Never. Or could we? Are there times when we might betray the Lord Jesus with our affections?
If we think about it, our worship is our primary affection expressed to the Lord. Could our worship ever be a betrayal? Hmmm. If the worship of our lips differs from the genuine attitude of our hearts, there is a type of betrayal. Or if the worship we express is for men to see, we betray Him just as sure as the kiss in the garden. When our outward worship is betrayed by sins of the heart, do we not betray Him? That may be why Jesus said we are to worship in Spirit and in Truth.
Judas betrayed the Lord by pointing Him out. But we are more likely to betray Him when we do not point Him out. We betray him when we point to ourselves rather than Jesus. We betray him when we focus attention on ourselves or point to the world as our source. We betray him when we fail to acknowledge Him in all we do. We betray him when our genuine affections turn toward the world rather than Him.

The horror of Judas' betrayal was that it was all for a price. Judas sold out. He was bought. The enemies of Jesus purchased the kiss that betrayed Him for thirty pieces of silver. That was the standard price for a common slave.
We might ask ourselves: Do I have a price? Is there a point at which I would sell out? Can my affections, interest, energy, or resources be purchased? Could I sell out to attention, pressure, prestige, or pleasure? It doesn't matter what the currency is; silver burns in the hands of a betrayer.

Purify my heart, Lord. Make me as pure as refined gold. Burn away anything that might draw my affection away from You. Purify my worship. Purify my walk. May I never betray You, Lord Jesus. Give me Your grace, Amen.
