Philippians 2

[9] Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name,

From the highest place, equality with God, to the lowest place. This was the path of Jesus.

In those final hours, Jesus' name had been dragged through the mud. He was despised, rejected, spat upon, and cursed. But, out of that obedient walk to the cross, a remarkable thing happened. God gave Him a Name above every name.

What is "the name?" Paul is not specific here, but it must be the name "Lord" used at the end of this hymn of praise. "Lord" is the equivalent of "Jehovah" in the Hebrew Scriptures. There is Good News and power in these eighteen words. Good News because God is in control. Even when the forces of evil appear to win, we serve a God who resurrects and glorifies His obedient Son. God wins. Period. God restores all that has been set aside for the purposes of God and more.

There is also power here. Power in knowing this name? Yes. But even more, there is power in the relationship that it identifies: "Lord Jesus." I have learned in years of ministry that when I am confronted with evil I do not understand or danger that seems to prevail if I call upon the Name of the Lord Jesus, He is ever faithful. He is more powerful than we can imagine.

But with that call for help also comes surrender. Someone once said that the words "No, Lord" can never but uttered together. There is truth in that — the word 'Lord' signals surrender to His will and way.

Are you facing some battles? Is the day ahead a difficult one? We begin to call upon the mighty name of the Lord Jesus when we surrender those battles and concerns to Him and call upon His name to have Lordship over the situation. He may surprise you in how He does that.

Lord, Jesus. I surrender this day to You. I confess that at times, I have uttered Your name in a way that was powerless in my life. Forgive me. Take complete reign and Lordship over this day. I surrender to You the problems and relationships that have troubled me. I eagerly await Your direction. I pray in the exalted name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.
