Ephesians 3

[4] In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, [5] which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. [6] This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in the promise in Christ Jesus.

What is a Mystery of God?  The word used here is mysterion, which means literally "to shut the mouth."  It is something like the opposite of "awesome" which opens the mouth in awe.

A mystery of God is a magnificent truth that was once concealed and has now been revealed.  When it is revealed, it is a "mouth shutter" meaning we just really can't add to something of such magnificence.  A mystery of God is something that brings us to silence because it is so profound that there is nothing to say in response to it. It is so powerful that it silences even our objections and questions.

The powerful thing about God's mysteries is that we realize there is a time to be silent before God.  There are times when God reveals things so profound that there is nothing to say.  Nothing to add.  No more commentary.  These are the mouth shutting moments.

We live in a world where there some who seem never to shut their mouths.  Now, realize that I am a professional talker. I know that. All the more reason for me to ponder the mysteries of God in Christ.  We need to.  We need to stop and let the mystery of Christ slam us and shut our mouths.  This specific mystery, which was not made known to men in other generations, has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets. This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are heirs together with Israel, members together of one body, and sharers together in Christ Jesus's promise.

Okay, I had to do this.  The word mystery is used ten times in the New Testament.  Paul accounts for eight of the ten, and the other two are from the book of Revelation.  The last is yet to be revealed.  Here they are: the mysteries of God in the Bible.

  1. The Gospel itself - Romans 16:25 - the proclamation of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery hidden for long ages past. Ephesians 6:19   Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel.
  2. The Salvation of Israel - Rom 11:25  - I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in.  And so all Israel will be saved.   As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.
  3. Resurrection of the Body - 1 Corinthians 15:51- Listen, I tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep (die)-- but we will all be changed-- in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed.
  4. Reconciliation of all things under Christ - Ephesians 1:9-10 - And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ.
  5. Co-inheritance - Gentiles are heirs with Israel; members together of one body, sharers in the promise. Eph 3:3-6
  6. Marriage - A Man and Woman become on flesh - Ephesians 5:31-32   "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."   This is a profound (exceedingly great and loud) mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church.
  7. Christ in You - the Hope of Glory - Colossians 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.
  8. Godliness - Leadership - 1 Timothy 3:16 - If I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God's household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth. Beyond all question, the mystery of godliness is great.  It is a mystery how people conduct themselves in a godly manner.
  9. Christ's Coming Again - His plans for the End of Time - Revelation 1:20 The mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and of the seven golden lampstands is this: The seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches.   Revelation 10:7 - But in the days when the seventh angel is about to sound his trumpet, the mystery of God will be accomplished, just as he announced to his servants the prophets."
  10. The Woman who Rides the Beast – in Revelation 17:1-5 is described as the "Mystery Babylon." This is a mystery to be revealed.

      Now. Be quiet.

Father God, I am silenced before You.
