Genesis 24
[10] Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and left, taking with him all kinds of good things from his master. He set out for Aram Naharaim and made his way to the town of Nahor. [11] He had the camels kneel down near the well outside the town; it was toward evening, the time the women go out to draw water.
[12] Then he prayed, "O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. [13] See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. [14] May it be that when I say to a girl, 'Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,' and she says, 'Drink, and I'll water your camels too'--let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this I will know that you have shown kindness to my master."
[15] Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milcah, who was the wife of Abraham's brother Nahor. [16] The girl was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever lain with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again.
[17] The servant hurried to meet her and said, "Please give me a little water from your jar."
[18] "Drink, my lord," she said, and quickly lowered the jar to her hands and gave him a drink.
[19] After she had given him a drink, she said, "I'll draw water for your camels too, until they have finished drinking." [20] So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough, ran back to the well to draw more water, and drew enough for all his camels. [21] Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the Lord had made his journey successful.
[22] When the camels had finished drinking, the man took out a gold nose ring weighing a beka and two gold bracelets weighing ten shekels. [23] Then he asked, "Whose daughter are you? Please tell me, is there room in your father's house for us to spend the night?"

Eliezer set out with quite a convoy! Ten camels and a lot of riches accompanied the chief servant of Abraham as he journeyed to the land of Abraham's ancestors in search of a bride for Isaac. But something else accompanied him: prayer. Eliezer prayed for success, "O Lord, God of my master Abraham, give me success today, and show kindness to my master Abraham."  He wanted to succeed in his assigned task and return with a wife for Isaac.
Eliezer also prayed for a specific sign.   This was not a "test"; it was simply a request for clear guidance. Eliezer wanted to be absolutely sure of God's will and hand in the selection of Isaac's wife. The specific sign was something that the Lord inspired in him, and the Lord made his journey successful.
What is success? Is it legitimate to pray for it? The Hebrew word for "success" that Eliezer used in this prayer means "to find a completion" or the "sending of good speed."  The phrase was used to speak of the completion of a roof or floor by laying beams. Have you ever completed a wood floor and put the last piece into place? This is the completion, the success, that Eliezer prayed for. Eliezer was praying for God to bring the pieces together to complete his purpose and journey. Certainly, this is a legitimate prayer!
When we think of success, we often have an image that the world has created. "Success" in the world is a particular lifestyle, gathering riches or worldly achievement. These things may come as a blessing and trust from God, but they have little to do with "success."  Success is the completion of the task that God has assigned for us. For Eliezer, the task assigned by his master was to find the perfect match for Isaac. This was critical! This woman was to be the mother of a nation. Just any pretty girl would not do. He prayed for success. He prayed for guidance. The task was completed.
What is your assigned task? If you do not know, how can you be successful? What is the purpose for which God has placed you here? Our chief purpose is to love the Lord and glorify Him in all we do. But is there a special task or calling toward that end?
What about for today? Is there a task that has been assigned? If you are like me, there is a list waiting! Pray for the favor of the Lord to be with you today that you may find success in Him.  Pray for the guidance of the Lord as you begin this day. Pray for the Lord to bring together the pieces and favor you with completion.

Lord God, give me success today and show kindness to my endeavors. Reveal to me the purpose of my life. Show me the purpose of this day. Give me the guidance I need for the choices that are ahead. Cause the pieces to fall into place to complete my mission and purpose. In Jesus' name.
