Colossians 1

[9] For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.  [10] And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way…

This is an amazing prayer.  We might call this the Apostle's Prayer.  It was uttered from prison in Rome on behalf of the Colossian believers. Paul joined with Pastor Epaphras to pray for the believers in a manner that powerfully speaks from the heart of of the Apostle to the heart of the Lord.

Paul prayed first for the Lord to fill these believers with the knowledge of His will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding… so that they might live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way.

The second petition is built on and grows out of the request for knowledge of the will of God. This is because living a worthy life is the purpose of knowing God's desire for one's life. The knowledge of God and His will is not imparted as an end in itself.  There is a practical intent-- the life worthy.

The phrase "live a life" is an important one.  It comes from a single Greek word that literally means "to walk."  It is used here and in the letter to the Ephesians to describe the Christian life in its outward expression.  To walk in a manner "worthy of the Lord" does not mean that we earn righteousness or justify ourselves in any way by our behavior. Instead, it means that we are called to live a life that is commensurate with what the Lord has done for us and is to us.

This prayer is for believers to act in a manner that is in conformity with our union with Christ and with his purpose for our lives.  We are not to gain knowledge purely for its own sake. Knowledge of God’s will always have ethical and real-life implications because it requires us to bring our daily conduct and thinking into line with it.  Genuine faith recognizes the truth and then allows it to permeate our lives.

We might ask ourselves today-- "How is my walk?  Am I walking in a manner worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him in every way?"  We might also ask-- "Am I praying for me fellow believers and their walk to be worthy of the Lord and pleasing to Him in every way?"

Father God, hear the prayer of my heart that echoes that of the Apostle.  Give to me fullness of the knowledge of Your will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding in order that I may live a life worthy of You and please You in every way.  I pray this for my fellow believers everywhere. In Jesus' Name.
