Luke 8:1-3

After this, Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. The Twelve were with him, [2] and also some women who had been cured of evil spirits and diseases: Mary (called Magdalene) from whom seven demons had come out; [3] Joanna the wife of Cuza, the manager of Herod's household; Susanna; and many others. These women were helping to support them out of their own means.

Jesus embarked on a speaking tour of sorts. We might call it a sort of "crusade" in the best sense of that word. He toured the countryside preaching here and there going village to village proclaiming the Good News. The crusade was financed by a group of women, notably Mary of Magdala, Joanna and Susanna. These were women of some means, wealthy women if you will. Joanna was the wife of the manager of Herod's household. Mary and Susanna may have been widows. We do know one thing. Jesus had touched all their lives profoundly. He healed and even cast seven demons out of Mary. One thing is for sure   If JESUS has touched your life profoundly then you will joyfully finance the proclamation of that message.

I never noticed it before but there is something very different about this crusade. Have you noticed it? Jesus traveled about from one town and village to another, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom of God. There were no miracles or healings. This was a PREACHING crusade. No demons were cast out. The focus was the message, the Good News, the Word. Isn't that interesting? Jesus will heal again. There will be more signs and wonders. But for right now He is focusing on the WORD.

Perhaps we learn here that there is a time for miracles and a time for the Word. The truth is that healings will come and go. Miracles are only remembered a little while. The grass withers and the flowers fade but the word of the Lord stands forever.

Ministry of the Word is definitely less flashy. It requires a steadfastness to present the Word regardless of the response. Undoubtedly as they went from village to village some responded and some did not. Some may have followed for a while and then dropped away. Some must have even wondered about Jesus but seeing no miracles and no healings, they wondered if we had lost the touch. Had the anointing gone away?

We need to recognize the power of the ministry of the Word. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of Christ. The Word is the power to change lives and change the world for Christ. People will often invite others to see the flashy ministries but neglect the importance and power of the Word in changing lives.

Are you committed to the Word? Are you invested in the study and proclamation of the Word?

Father God, help me to see the power of Your Word in a new way. Help me to see the value of investing in the proclamation of Your Word. Help me to personally the way that You are changing the world through Your Word. In Jesus' name.
