John 17
[20] "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, [21] that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. [22] I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one: [23] I in them and you in me. May they be brought to complete unity to let the world know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me. [24] "Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world. [25] "Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. [26] I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them."

Jesus did not pray only for the eleven disciples. He also prayed specifically for future disciples. Think about it. On this most pressured of nights, when Jesus was on His way to be betrayed, tried, and crucified, He took time out to pray for you and me. That is powerful. Jesus prayed seven specific prayers for you!
1) That we may be one. The unity that Jesus prayed for was much more than just agreement or peaceful coexistence. Jesus prayed that we might know the same sort of unity that He experiences with the Father. When we are united with God in Christ, we will be united with other believers.
2) That we may be in the Lord. Though we may experience salvation, we do not always abide in the Lord. Even though the Lord is faithful to abide in us, we are not always faithful to abide in the Lord. Jesus prayed specifically for our walk with God. He prayed for us to have the strength to abide in Him on a daily basis.
3) So that the world may believe by seeing our relationship with Jesus. The way that the world will know that Jesus is real is by seeing Him in us. That only happens when we walk in fellowship with the Lord.
4) Unity so that the world may see God’s love. This is our actual witness of agreement and united effort, vision and cooperation. The world knows what the church looks like when it is not walking after the spirit. We have centuries of horrific errors, missteps and infighting. When the world sees the unity of the Spirit in His Body, they will take notice.
5) That we will be with Jesus in glory. Jesus wants to spend eternity with you. That was one of His prayers as He went to the cross. The least we can do is take Him up on His offer of grace and look forward to that moment.
6) That we may have faith. That we may know that God sent Jesus for our salvation. Jesus knew this would be difficult to believe. He prayed for us to have rock solid faith and to believe that Jesus came from God to save us.
7) That the love of God may be in us. Jesus prayed that the very love of God would be in every one of us. We are God’s chosen plan for loving the world. We are His plan for sharing His love with those who do not yet know Him. We are His chosen plan for relieving suffering.
Wow. I don’t know about you but those are powerful prayers to me.

Lord Jesus, thank You for praying for me so long ago. Thank You for thinking of me on such a terrible night. I surrender to Your prayer. Manifest oneness between me and other believers. Give me strength to remain in You so that the world may know You. Give us unity in the Body of Christ so that the world might see and believe. Thank You for making a place for me in glory. Now give me the faith to walk in obedience to You. May Your love be evident in me this day and every day. In Jesus’ name.
