Exodus 4
[27] The Lord said to Aaron, "Go into the desert to meet Moses." So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him. [28] Then Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and also about all the miraculous signs he had commanded him to perform.
[29] Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, [30] and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, [31] and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.

Zipporah and the sons apparently returned to Midian after Moses' recovery from the grave illness. There is a reference to this in Exodus 18:2-3. The reason for her leaving is not stated. Still, Moses may have wanted to protect them from the danger of the journey and the horrors of Egyptian bondage. Several months later, Moses would be reunited with his family.
Meanwhile, the Lord was calling Aaron to come and help. Aaron was three years older than Moses. He had not seen his brother for forty years when the Lord suddenly spoke to him. We do not know the details of the encounter. The Lord used a burning bush to gain the attention of Moses, but we do not know how Aaron came to trust that the Lord was speaking. Perhaps he just knew.
Aaron's role was much more than simply an assistant. Aaron's call was to co-operate with Moses in all they were required to do to bring about the Exodus. He was to be the "mouth" or "prophet" of Moses, just as Moses was the prophet of God. The text describes Aaron as a man of "ready utterance." He was able to communicate quickly, clearly, and incisively. Together they shared the plan with the Hebrew leaders and people. This was a huge undertaking, but the people readily received this good news probably because they were so miserable in their bondage.
It is interesting to consider both the importance and place of Aaron. He was not the Prophet of God, but he was able to help in essential ways. The Lord could have "healed" Moses' deficiencies, but instead, He used Aaron. God more often works this way. He brings someone alongside who has different gifts and can complete what is needed.
There is a critical distinction here that is not to be missed. Even though Aaron had superior communication skills, his place and call were not to be the prophet. His place was to aid and communicate on behalf of Moses. Both are important but should not be confused. Without Aaron, Moses could not have communicated the message from God. Without Moses, Aaron had no message from God, no matter how slick his words were.
In our modern religious culture, people tend to respond to "style and form" above the truth. Quick wit, clever phrasing, and an energetic presentation draw a crowd and are often assumed to carry a true message. Of course, this is not always true. Being of "ready utterance" may seem like a gifting, but it is not the same as being anointed to speak prophetically or even interpret the message of God in Scripture.
For us today? We are to seek the Lord and find our place in the Body of Christ. Our place may be "prophetic," not that we bring any "new revelation," but in the sense that we bring the Word of God for God's people for this time. Our role may be to help bring that message clearly to the people through music, drama, audio, or visual support.
In churches across America and worldwide, there are those who bring the Word, and those who help every week. From the first greeting in the parking lot to the final note of music, it is the team of God's people who bring the Word of God to a hungry world. The truth of God's freedom first came through a man who was "slow of tongue" but who had help. What is your part?

Lord, show me how it is that You want me to be involved in sharing the ministry of the Gospel. I am listening. I am ready to respond. In Jesus' name.
