Ephesians 1

[17] I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. [18] I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints,

This was the prayer of Paul-- that the Ephesian believers would know God better because of the wisdom and revelation of the Holy Spirit.

Spiritual wisdom is a quality that realizes the deeper significance of knowledge or facts.  Spiritual wisdom gives divine insight into the true nature of things. Revelation opens or illumines us to the truth of Scripture or of a situation.  It is the unveiling of a truth or of God’s nature.

Isaiah wrote, “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him [Messiah]--the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and of power, the Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord” (11:2).

Paul also prayed for the Ephesians that the eyes of the heart would be enlightened through this deeper walk with the Lord. With the eyes of the heart, we see and feel what the Lord sees and feels.  With the eyes of the heart, we are enlightened so that we might know the hope to which he has called us. This is a wondrous explanation of how we grow to know Him better.

      And what is that hope?

A believer’s present hope has its source in the past when we were called to salvation.  Our hope lies in the absolute certainty of a believer’s victory in God.

And you also are among those who are called to belong to Jesus Christ (Romans 1:6).  Later, Paul will express that There is one body and one Spirit-- just as you were called to one hope when you were called--   (Ephesians 4:4).

A believer’s future hope is planted firmly in the future-- the riches of His glorious inheritance in the saints.  We often think of our inheritance with Christ and fail to recognize that we are God’s inheritance.  At the time of the resurrection of believers, God will inherit those whom He has purchased at a great price according to the riches of His grace.

As believers, we have an inheritance, which is our final redemption.  In him, we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace (Ephesians 1:7).  But God’s inheritance is the saints themselves! Because of the glorious grace of the glorious Father, He will receive His glorious inheritance.

Father God, enlighten the eyes of my heart that I may see clearly the hope that is before me.  I rejoice in the calling of salvation the redemption that is before me.  Because of Your glorious grace, I rejoice as I join with others to be Your glorious inheritance.  In Jesus’ Name.
