1 Peter 5

[7] Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.

The KJV renders this "Cast all your cares on him because he cares for you."   The Greek word for “cares” means those things that would distract or divide into pieces - the things that disunite us.

Why do we struggle so much to let go of things that tear us apart anyway?  Why is it that we become anxious?  Is it that we really think that God is not big enough?  No.  We often have little trouble affirming that He is the God who created the entire universe.  But our worry and anxiety most likely come from the very fact that God is so big.

We wonder, how is it that the God of the whole universe, who created everything that I see and so much that I cannot even see, really care about me?  How can the God whom we know innately to be Lord over the mysteries of life and death care for a tiny speck like me on a small planet orbiting in a tiny galaxy?  Isn't this at least part of the issue?

That is why the story of Jesus is so very important.  The Word, the order and logic of the whole universe, became flesh and lived for a while among us. The God of the universe not only cared enough to visit, but He also came to redeem us and then left the power of His Holy Spirit to remain and empower us to become what He had always intended for us to be.

The mystery of God is not His attention to the vast galaxies, it is attention to the tiny details.  The awe is not so much in the big stuff; it is that He remains concerned with the small stuff, like us.  The God of the whole universe stopped to talk with people just like you and me.  In fact, He still does!

This is a truth worth claiming.  Are you anxious?  Pulled in many directions?  Disunited?  Cast all of your cares‑‑ the things that disunite‑‑ cast them upon the Lord.  He cares for you.

Lord, take from me my anxious thoughts.  Lift from me the burdens that I should never have taken upon myself.  Take from me the things that disunite.  In Jesus' name.
