Matthew 27
[33] They came to a place called Golgotha (which means The Place of the Skull). [34] There they offered Jesus wine to drink, mixed with gall; but after tasting it, he refused to drink it. [35] When they had crucified him, they divided up his clothes by casting lots. [36] And sitting down, they kept watch over him there. [37] Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is Jesus, the king of the Jews. [38] Two robbers were crucified with him, one on his right and one on his left. [39] Those who passed by hurled insults at him, shaking their heads [40] and saying, "You who are going to destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself! Come down from the cross, if you are the Son of God!"
[41] In the same way the chief priests, the teachers of the law and the elders mocked him. [42] "He saved others," they said, "but he can't save himself! He's the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. [43] He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, 'I am the Son of God.' " [44] In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.

The crucifixion. It is almost surreal. In one moment, it makes us retch with grief, yet in the next we we also sing with thanksgiving. It is a place so cruel and gruesome that we want to turn away. Yet, it is a place so compelling and filled with love that we return to it again and again.
Golgotha is an event of history, a part of our past, and yet it is also very much a part of our present. Why? Because it is the place of our atonement. It is always with us. It is the place where God finally made peace with you and me.
This is the place where, once and for all, the power of sin was defeated. In all of its ugliness, there is a certain and undeniable beauty. In all of its mystery, there is a certain truth here that transcends everything.
There is little that could be said about the crucifixion that has not been said, sung, preached, or portrayed. There is not a lot to say about the crucifixion. It seems the crucifixion says it all. It is a place to ponder.
Here are the words of Christ Tomlin:

I'm forgiven because You were forsaken.
I'm accepted, You were condemned.
I am alive and well, Your spirit is within me.
Because You died and rose again.

Amazing love, how can it be?
That You, my King would die for me?
Amazing love, I know its true.
It's my joy to honor You.
In all I do, I honor You.
[Chris Tomlin – “Amazing Love”]

Lord, I give thanks from the depths of my soul for the crucifixion. Thank You for making peace with me through the cross. In Jesus’ name.
