Numbers 11

[21] But Moses said, "Here I am among six hundred thousand men on foot, and you say, 'I will give them meat to eat for a whole month!' [22] Would they have enough if flocks and herds were slaughtered for them? Would they have enough if all the fish in the sea were caught for them?"

[23] The Lord answered Moses, "Is the Lord's arm too short? You will now see whether or not what I say will come true for you."

There is a saying we use in youth ministry that goes like this-- “There is no such thing as too much pizza."  Teenagers are indeed able to consume a seemingly infinite volume of pizza.  It does not matter how much you order, it will all be gone.  But in the desert east of Mt. Sinai, this was one “pizza order” that Moses could not comprehend.

Now Moses was a man of faith to be sure.  He had seen plagues and miracles and had come as close to looking God in the eye as anyone ever would!  But how could the Lord possibly provide such a volume of meat that it could not all be consumed and the people would become sick of it?  Such a promise seemed absolutely incredible.

As Moses thought about the situation, he was convinced that even all the flocks and herds of Israel and all the fish of the sea would be inadequate to feed the 600,000 men of Israel and their families for a month.  So the Lord replied with a powerful question that instructs us to this day.  “Is the Lord’s arm too short?”  Moses would see the results with his own eyes.

The question is very similar to one the Lord asked of Abraham and Sarah after He told them that they would bear a child in their old age.  Sarah laughed to herself as she thought, "After I am worn out, and my master is old, will I now have this pleasure?"  Then the Lord said to Abraham, "Why did Sarah laugh and say, 'Will I really have a child, now that I am old?'  Is anything too hard for the Lord? I will return to you at the appointed time next year, and Sarah will have a son" (Genesis 18:12-14).

Is anything too hard for the Lord?  There are times when the plans of the Lord seem too incredible to believe.  These are the times when circumstances reveal a great opportunity for our faith to grow!  The Lord will often put before us a possibility that seems impossible.  Jesus was very clear that the things that are impossible with men are possible with God (Luke 18:27).  Of this, we often need reminding.

The ministry of Jesus exemplified the truth that we serve the God who overcomes the impossible.  Jesus walked on water, healed the sick, raised the dead, and fed thousands of people from a sack lunch.  He was crucified for our sins and then was raised from the dead to meet His disciples about town.  The presence of the Lord is the presence of possibility where we would have deemed the situation impossible.

Are you facing some tough circumstances?  Are there difficult problems ahead?  Is the Lord's arm too short?  Is anything too hard for the Lord?  What is impossible with men is possible with God.  It’s time to grow!

Lord, build my faith-- my deep trust in You.  Show me the ways that You desire to enter into this world and do wondrous things.  Show me the impossibilities You wish to overcome.  In Jesus’ name. Amen.
