Jesus lived in an Age of Denial. The Jewish people were constantly threatened by Rome. Those within Judaism were under threat from religious leaders. The easy answer was Denial. Just deny being part of any rebellion. Deny being part of any collaboration. And most of all, deny knowing Jesus.

We also live in an Age of Denial. While the threats are different, the temptation is the same. People deny the Bible, deny morality, and deny truth. It is easier to deny knowing anything about Jesus than to acknowledge Him. For that reason, Denial is a big deal to Jesus.
