Draw Near: To Such a Great Salvation
June 16, 2024 Pastor: Dr. Jeffrey D. Hoy Series: Draw Near
Verse: Hebrews 2:5–9
We sometimes hear the phrase "At risk" used to describe a child, teen, family, or marriage. The Cambridge Dictionary defines this as being in danger of being harmed or damaged, or of dying.
The same phrase could be used to describe Believers or Christ-followers. In the first century, almost all Believers were Jewish by origin. It was a huge adjustment to accept and trust Jesus as the Messiah of God. It was even bigger to put faith in Him as Lord and Savior—the One who brings us salvation. There was terrible persecution from outside the faith. There was also persecution from the inside—the religious leaders who rejected Jesus.
The letter to the Hebrews was written to these scattered believers-- mostly Jewish-- who were At Risk. They were At Risk of slipping backward-- falling away. They were At Risk of losing their grasp on such a Great Salvation that comes through Jesus.
