Nehemiah had faced several enemies, all from the outside. Governors from the north, east, and south had come against the efforts to rebuild the city and walls of Jerusalem. The opposition came pressuring, posturing, and threatening from every direction, but all this had only made the people stronger. Now, there was a new threat. It was the threat from within. People began turning against one another. There was division, strife, and injustice.
