Exodus 3
[13] Moses said to God, "Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they ask me, 'What is his name?' Then what shall I tell them?"
[14] God said to Moses, "I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: 'I am has sent me to you.'"
[15] God also said to Moses, "Say to the Israelites, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob--has sent me to you.' This is my name forever, the name by which I am to be remembered from generation to generation.
[16] "Go, assemble the elders of Israel and say to them, 'The Lord, the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob--appeared to me and said: I have watched over you and have seen what has been done to you in Egypt. [17] And I have promised to bring you up out of your misery in Egypt into the land of the Canaanites, Hittites, Amorites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites--a land flowing with milk and honey.'
[18] "The elders of Israel will listen to you. Then you and the elders are to go to the king of Egypt and say to him, 'The Lord, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us take a three-day journey into the desert to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God.' [19] But I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go unless a mighty hand compels him. [20] So I will stretch out my hand and strike the Egyptians with all the wonders that I will perform among them. After that, he will let you go.
[21] "And I will make the Egyptians favorably disposed toward this people, so that when you leave you will not go empty-handed. [22] Every woman is to ask her neighbor and any woman living in her house for articles of silver and gold and for clothing, which you will put on your sons and daughters. And so you will plunder the Egyptians."

How do you respond to a plan such as this? Free a people from bondage? Moses had several objections. The first objection was to ask, "Who am I that I should attempt this great thing?" The response of the Lord (3:11-12) was to point out that it really did not matter who Moses was. The critical point was who God is. This is always the case. Who we are matters to God (because this is His choice -- Ps. 139), but who we are does not make a difference in the equation of God's success. The only thing that matters is who God is.
For Moses, this begged the question. "Exactly who are You? What is Your name, should anyone ask?" The answer was absolutely complete and yet veiled. 'I AM' is my name. I am who I am.
My name is the verb form of personal existence. I am the ever-existent One. I am the uncreated One. I am the Lord, the God of your fathers-- the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. I am before everything and after everything. I AM the answer to every conceivable question or need.
Then the Lord sketched out the plan. Moses was to announce to the leaders of Israel what God had in mind. The leaders were to request of Pharaoh a three-day journey into the desert. But the Lord knew they would not be released without a mighty show of Divine power. The Israelites would eventually be freed and leave Egypt with many material possessions because the Egyptians would be favorably disposed toward them.
This plan was a broad sketch. The details regarding the massive project we now call the Exodus would have been too much for Moses to digest. God was in the details. What Moses needed was, again, the reassurance of WHO was in charge of this undertaking.
When we seek God for guidance, we often confuse what is really important. We tend to want the details of God's plan when we really need to focus on the details of God's character and nature. Our decision to obey can never be rooted in the plan. Obedience must always be rooted in the character of God.
It does not matter where, how or when we are going into the future. What matters is WHO. As long as we know who we are following, we can go anywhere that is necessary.
For Moses, the plan would include mobilizing about two million people, caring for them in the desert, and shaping them into a worshiping nation over 40 years. Not exactly a piece of cake even for a retired general turned sheepherder. But with I AM, all things are possible.
What does God have in store for you? God is in the details. The main thing is to get to know the Lord. He is before all things. He is able. He is our Provider. He is our Rock. He is our Fortress. He is our Deliverer. He is our Shepherd. He is our Healer. He is our Banner. He is our Father.

Father God, I want to know You more. I want to love You more. I want to rest in the knowledge that Your character and nature are more than sufficient for my future. Walk with me today and reveal Yourself. In Jesus' name.
