John 6
[22] The next day the crowd that had stayed on the opposite shore of the lake realized that only one boat had been there, and that Jesus had not entered it with his disciples, but that they had gone away alone. [23] Then some boats from Tiberias landed near the place where the people had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks. [24] Once the crowd realized that neither Jesus nor his disciples were there, they got into the boats and went to Capernaum in search of Jesus.
[25] When they found him on the other side of the lake, they asked him, "Rabbi, when did you get here?"
[26] Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you ate the loaves and had your fill. [27] Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval."
[28] Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?"
[29] Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

What do you do the morning after a miraculous feeding? Some asked, “What’s for breakfast?”
While many of the people Jesus fed miraculously went back to their homes, there was a crowd that stayed the night and the next morning they were hungry. They started looking for Jesus so they could get breakfast!
The problem with miraculous feedings is that they only last a few hours. The crowd finally figured out that Jesus was not around there and caught a ride to Capernaum with some folks who had come with boats from Tiberias across the lake.
At Capernaum Jesus saw through to the hearts of those who had been seeking Him. To paraphrase, Jesus responded saying, “You guys just want breakfast. Don’t come just looking for more food. Come looking for spiritual food that will give you eternal life! This is the Son of Man, not a fast food restaurant.” (JEV – Jeff’s English Version.)
It is not that Jesus lacked compassion for hungry people. He had already shown his great compassion for their physical hunger. Now He wanted the crowd to see that He had more to offer than a quick fish sandwich. There were deep spiritual concerns and hungers that Jesus wanted to meet in their lives. Jesus was concerned with their daily needs or He would not have fed them in the first place. He just didn’t want them to miss asking about their deeper hunger.
The response of the crowd was classic. “Okay, what do we have to do?” How can we earn this eternal life? What does God require us to do? Jesus’ answer is the foundation of Christian faith. Believe. Believe in the One God has sent. That is the only “work” that you can do and that is no work at all! Trust me.
Depend on Me and not on your works. This fundamental truth is what Paul was talking about when he wrote to the Ephesians: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God-- not by works, so that no one can boast (Ephes. 2:8-9).
So what are you seeking from Jesus? Are you looking for the quick fix? Fast food? Easy answers? Or are you looking to Him to meet the deep longing of Your soul? Don’t misunderstand. Jesus is concerned with your daily needs. He just doesn’t want you to miss asking about your deeper needs.

Lord, I lift to You the daily needs of my life. Give us this day our daily bread. But I don’t want to stop with physical concerns. I want the Bread of Life that only You can give. I want the eternal filling that only You provide. In Jesus’ Name.
