Genesis 1
[28] God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and over every living creature that moves on the ground."
[29] Then God said, "I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. [30] And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds of the air and all the creatures that move on the ground--everything that has the breath of life in it--I give every green plant for food." And it was so.
[31] God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning--the sixth day.

A while back, a national ad campaign asked the question:  "What would Jesus drive?"  The intent was directed toward environmental conservation and responsibility, and it is an interesting question. While I could appreciate the thought very much, a bit of the scholar and the rebel in me wanted to point out that the answer is not that easy.
If Jesus was a carpenter and a stonemason as most scholars tell us, perhaps He would drive an F-350 super duty... unless of course He is a GM man and would drive a Denali 3500HD... or maybe a Ram 1500 with a HEMI.
Whichever, He would certainly have a concrete saw in the back, a heavy-duty tool case, and a winch on the front. He likely would have a king cab because he often had people with him. He would drive a four-wheel drive. After all, he liked to withdraw to lonely places. And because He traveled with no less than 12 and often many more, His second car would be a 15 passenger van. And gas? Well, that would probably not be a big problem, not any more than feeding a crowd of 5,000 was.
But okay, we get the point of the question. In an economy driven by consumption, how much would Jesus choose to consume? Is there a simplicity that should be reflected in life? Do we have a responsibility to be good stewards of the earth entrusted to us?
Our text teaches that humans are to fill the earth and subdue it. We are to be fruitful and to tame the resources given to us. But are we to use them all up? Good question. Whether the earth is filling up or not, overconsumption does not reflect the principles of stewardship that the Scriptures teach.
So here is the key. The earth is precious. It is precious because it is creation, and we cannot do it. Only God can create. Creation is not ours, it is God's, and it is entrusted to us. No matter how fragile and limited or resilient and unlimited we perceive creation to be, it is precious. It is here for us, for people. It should never be squandered.
We are not to worship creation. It is not to be held in higher esteem than people. But it is not to be wasted either.

Father God, help me to be a faithful steward personally of everything You entrust to me. Help me be a faithful steward in the ways I use and consume. Help me think beyond myself to the next generations and faithfully preserve the wonder of your creation. In Jesus' Name.
