Genesis 6
[9] These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God. [10] And Noah became the father of three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. [11] Now the earth was corrupt in the sight of God, and the earth was filled with violence. [12] And God looked on the earth, and behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth.

Why did God choose Noah? Why did the family of Noah become the remnant God would use to begin a new creation on the earth? We cannot be sure. The choices of God are sovereign and beyond our understanding. But the Word reveals three powerful things about Noah.
Noah was a "righteous man." This word means "lawful" or "just." There was no "law" from God in place, but Noah behaved to seek to please God. Noah behaved in a way consistent with the conscience God gave him and the sense of right and wrong that is readily observed in Creation. This word describes Noah's dealing with people. Noah was "just" toward others. He was a fair man. He did not take advantage.
He was "blameless in his time." The Hebrew word does not necessarily mean that Noah was perfect because he never made a mistake. It says that Noah had integrity. He was "entire" or "whole." He walked with perfect sincerity. Noah had no ulterior motives or hidden secrets. No accusation could be made against his character, actions, or motivations.
He walked with God. What does this mean? We live in a world where we "go for a walk" as a form of relaxation or exercise. In Noah's world, walking was the primary mode of transportation. This was the image of a long journey together, a life together. Noah did not "go for a walk" with God. It was not a periodic activity.
The word used here also means to be "continually conversant." It is the image of friends or family talking about everything as they journey together. This is undoubtedly a big part of walking with God. Noah did not "say prayers" periodically. He simply conversed with God continually. I cannot help but think of Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof," who constantly talks to God about his joys and frustrations, his life and concerns.
What does the Lord call us to? Noah shows us at least part of it. By the power of the Holy Spirit in us, we can walk just as Noah did. Jesus has declared us truly righteous by His sacrificial death. He has broken the hold that sin once held upon us. He has also given us His Spirit that we may be whole and walk with integrity.
We have access to God like no other. We can journey with God every day. We can be continually conversant with the Lord about the joys, needs, and concerns of life. We don't need to "go for a walk" with God if we continually walk with Him. We need not "say a prayer" if we are constantly conversant with Him.

Lord, walk with me today. I choose to walk with You. I don't want to "go on a walk." I want to continually journey with You. I don't want to "say prayers" to You. I want to constantly converse with You. In Jesus' mighty name. (No Amen today, I will just keep walking and talking.)
