Colossians 2

[6] So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him,

The most literal translation of this verse says— continue to walk in him.  Just as you received salvation in Christ, now walk it out, this life with Christ.  Walking in Him is the image Paul used most to describe the life journey we have in Christ.

Paul was writing to encourage and exhort the believers in a church he never visited.  He was trying to get them back on track after hearing that they were listening to some high-sounding arguments that relegated Jesus to being just one of many layers of spiritual awareness.  But these were believers!  They had received Jesus Christ as Lord.  The challenge now was to walk out that belief even when the going was tough.

But if you think about, our life with Christ is all about the walk. How we continue to live— walk in Him— that is the measure of Christian faith.  Not a testimony about a beginning.  Not a conversion.  Not an emotional experience or church affiliation.  It is all about the walk.

What does that look like?  Believers walk just as they have received Christ, by faith. We received Christ by faith, so we are to walk and continue with Christ by faith. When we received Christ, we trusted His righteousness and death to cover our sins and to make us acceptable to God. Therefore, we are to walk in continuing trust in His righteousness and death.

It is the righteousness and death of Jesus that continues to cover our sins and make us acceptable to God. We have nothing within us to earn, merit, deserve, or make God accept us.  We can do nothing and can possess nothing that will secure the approval of God.  Our only acceptance before God is in Christ, trusting the righteousness and death of Christ.  We walk by faith, not by sight (2 Cor. 5:7).

Believers received Christ as Jesus, the Lord. That is, when believers receive Him, they accept Him as the true Messiah and Lord from heaven.  We accept Him as the Lord of our lives. Therefore, as believers, we are to walk before Him as Lord.  We are to continue walking and serving Him as the Lord of our lives.

The great missionary E. Stanley Jones once said: “If Jesus is not Lord of all, He is not Lord at all.”  We do not walk with Him as Lord of part of our life but not another.  We do not walk with Him trusting for eternal salvation, yet fearful for the next moment in this life.  We do not assign to Him jurisdiction over only certain areas of life. We walk with Christ as Lord.

How is your walk?  Are you walking with Him as Lord?  Are you walking out the journey that you began with Him when you received Him as Christ the Lord?

Lord, Jesus, I surrender everything to You.  All that I am, all that I have, all that I ever hope to be, I surrender everything to You.  Give me grace to walk out this journey with You by faith.  In Jesus' Name.
