Colossians 2

[13] When you were dead in your sins and in the uncircumcision of your sinful nature, God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins,   [14] having canceled the written code, with its regulations, that was against us and that stood opposed to us; he took it away, nailing it to the cross.   [15] And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Exactly what did Jesus do for you?

Well.  You used to be dead and now you are alive if you trust in Him and receive the Life He offers.  Did you get that?  D-E-A-D in your sinful nature, and God made you A-L-I-V-E with Christ.  He gave you life.  L-I-F-E.  That is pretty good.

And He forgave us most of our sins? No?  I read that wrong?  He forgave us some of our sins?  Wrong again?  I see.  Oh, I get it, He forgave us all of our socially acceptable sins? Uh, no?  Wrong again?  Let’s look at it closely:  He forgave us all our sins—the good sins and bad sins, the really bad sins, and even the stinking rotten sins.

He did this through careful argument and legal maneuvering?  Wrong again?  I see… He cancelled the written code?  Just completely cancelled it?  Yes, along with its regulations and every charge that stood against us.  He took the code of the Law and nailed it to the cross, with His very flesh and blood.

Wow.  He cancelled the claims of the Law against us, okay, but even more, He disarmed our enemies!  He took away their power.  He made them impotent before us.  The powers of this dark world may squawk and brag, but they are fighting naked!  Totally disarmed and powerless.

In fact, Jesus made a public spectacle of them.  The enemy is not just disarmed and defeated; he is flat out humiliated.  He has been triumphed over boldly by the power of the cross—trounced, stripped, disarmed, declawed, defanged, humiliated, and laughed at.  No wonder the enemy is angry.

So.  Next time old Beelzebub pokes his nose in your business, you might point out that he looks sort of silly naked and humiliated, powerless, and disarmed.  You might remind him of the thing that he hates the most, the C-R-O-S-S.  Yes, remember that!  The place where Lucifer was trounced mangled and humiliated.  In case he forgot, just read any of the passion narratives.  He hates that.

That is what Jesus did for you.  Now go out and walk in it.  Walk in the victory.

Father God, thank You for the cross, Lord.   Thank You for the nail-pierced hands.  Thank you for the cleansing flow, so now I know, His forgiveness and embrace.   You are worthy, Lamb of God.  In Jesus’ Name.
