Ruth 2

[8] So Boaz said to Ruth, "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here. Stay here with my servant girls. [9] Watch the field where the men are harvesting, and follow along after the girls. I have told the men not to touch you. And whenever you are thirsty, go and get a drink from the water jars the men have filled."

Boaz had taken notice of Ruth. But more than that, he offered protection and provision. He made it clear that the men in his field would not harm her. He offered a safe place among the servants of his house and water in jars so that she did not need to draw or carry from a well. It would have been normal to expect the women to draw water for the jars, but Boaz had made the provision so that this was done by the men.

Still, it is easy to see how pride might have gotten in the way. Ruth might have suggested that if Boaz had a proposal to make, it should not be a place among his servants but a date at the altar! But we don't even see a hint of that. Ruth was willing to be under the protection and provision offered by Boaz as a servant.

We should especially notice that Boaz didn't issue an order to Ruth or even a stern warning that she dare not leave. He simply gave an invitation: "My daughter, listen to me. Don't go and glean in another field and don't go away from here.”

Our Lord gives us a similar offer: Come and work among those harvesting. There is water that is plentiful that you do not have to draw. You will not be harmed. But don't go anywhere else. There is no protection outside of the field to which I have invited you.

That is where we often mess things up. We go out from the protection that God has afforded us. We think we can glean more profitably in other fields. We think there might be something better that we are missing elsewhere. We wander.

Sometimes we wander because of pride or because we don't like to be with the servants. Other times we wander because we think we can draw our own water and for ourselves. But that can't be done. There is danger in any other field.

We must choose to stay under the provision and protection of God. That is what Lordship is really all about. Jesus taught by Word and example how to live in a place of protected servanthood where there is plenty of water.

Where are you today? Have you wandered from the protection of God? Have you gotten into the wrong field? It's time to come home. The water is fine.

Lord, Jesus, I want nothing more than to work in Your field of harvest. Thank you for Your offer of provision and protection. Quench the thirst of my soul with Your living water. In Jesus' name. Amen.
