Genesis 3
[21] The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them. [22] And the Lord God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." [23] So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. [24] After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

God provided some temporary "traveling clothes" for Adam and Eve as they left the Garden. But there was still a massive consequence as a result of their sin. This consequence is passed down to every man and woman.
Adam and Eve were cast out of the Garden and barred from access to the tree of life. Before the Fall, they were permitted and intended to eat from the tree of life, and every other tree except one. For this transgression-- trying to be "like God"-- they would be banished from the protection of the Garden and the life that was there. The Hebrew word in Mosaic Law meaning, "to be put to death," literally means to be "cut off from community." Adam and Eve were cut off from the protective community of the Garden. Now they would "surely die."
So what is our human condition? We are not just dying in our mortal bodies— "returning to the dust." We are spiritually dead in our transgressions and sins (Ephesians 2:1). We are cast out of the community that gives life!
The Good News? There is great news! The Good News is that just as sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, so God has provided righteousness through the obedience one Man (Romans 5:12, 19). Death came through one man, Adam, and the resurrection of the dead also came through one Man, Jesus Christ. Just as "in Adam" all die, so also "in Christ" will all be made alive (1 Cor. 15:21-22). In Christ, we are clothed no longer with temporary skins but with the very righteousness of Christ Himself. These are our "traveling clothes!"
The redemption of the Lord Jesus covers our sin and invites us to partake of life once again. The Bible declares: "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God" (Rev. 2:7). Because of the work of God in us through Christ Jesus, we are destined and empowered to overcome the weight of sin and enjoy life in paradise.
The key here is "in Christ." The Apostle Paul declares this joyous truth that "If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come" (2 Cor. 5:17)! There is no better news that we could claim today than this.
Sons of Adam and daughters of Eve, are you "in Christ"? Have you received your traveling clothes from Him, the very righteousness of Christ as your covering? Have you received the gift of new life?

Lord God, I give thanks for the provision You have made in Christ so that I might have life. Clothe me in Your righteousness. Restore me to the community of life and grace. Make me into the new creation. In Jesus' Name.
