Romans 4
What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather, discovered in this matter? [2] If, in fact, Abraham was justified by works, he had something to boast about--but not before God. [3] What does the Scripture say? "Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness."

Have you ever wished you could just go to the ATM and transfer some money into your account?  It sure would be nice if there were an honest way to do that!  What if you could transfer a multi-million-dollar balance into your account?  Wouldn't that be wonderful?
No, I am not off into prosperity theology.  But Paul does talk about a transfer that is similar to a huge ATM but far greater.  He is talking about Faith that actually transfers righteousness from one account to another.
The Rabbis of Paul's day taught that Abraham was "meritorious."  They said he had a great deal of merit stored up, which was available to his descendants.  Paul argued that, if this was so, Abraham could only have boasted before other men and not before God.  Even Abraham, the patriarch of Judaism, was justified by Faith and not by works. Even Abraham received a "transfer of credit" by Faith!  Paul quoted Genesis15:6 which states that Abraham's Faith in God and His Promise was "credited to him" as righteousness. Because Abraham believed, God imputed righteousness to his account.
The wonderful thing is that we have the same opportunity by Faith.  When we believe in Christ and His work on the cross, righteousness is credited to us.  The word "credited" is elogistheo in Greek and is an accounting term.  It describes a balance transfer that takes place just like a modern-day direct deposit. All the "righteousness account" of Jesus is transferred to your account.
All this would be wonderful if your account was at a zero balance but then received the "righteousness balance" of Jesus, but that is not the case. The truth is your balance and mine were overdrawn to a negative balance that cannot even be measured. The transfer of Jesus' balance to yours by Faith is the essence of the Gospel.  It is as if you stepped up to the ATM and all you needed to do is enter the right codes, and a huge transfer of righteousness is moved to your account. No work involved; you just need the right codes.
Have you transferred that balance?  Many walk in bondage because they continue to try to achieve righteousness by their works.  Many try to work hard at being "spiritual."  We often try to operate on our own exhausted funds when all that we really need is to transfer His balance by Faith.

Lord Jesus, I am putting in Your code.  My funds are insufficient.  My account is marked overdraft.  I need You and Your righteousness.  Transfer Your account to mine.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
