Hebrews 1
[5] For to which of the angels did God ever say, "You are my Son; today I have become your Father"? Or again, "I will be his Father, and he will be my Son"? [6] And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says, "Let all God's angels worship him."[7] In speaking of the angels, he says, "He makes his angels winds, his servants flames of fire."
[8] But about the Son, he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever, and righteousness will be the scepter of your kingdom. [9] You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy." [10] He also says, "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. [11] They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. [12] You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end." [13] To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"? [14] Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

Okay. I confess. I really liked watching "Touched by an Angel." I know. Some will point out that the stories are pretty cheesy and the soteriology (theology of salvation) is weak. And the Christology (theology of Christ) is fuzzy at best. But the reruns are great because it is a clean television show about positive things that shows the Lord as lovingly involved in the lives of His people. I really like the angels, too.

Angels have gotten popular lately. Just check the bookstore. You will find titles like Angels A to Z, Know Your Angels, Ask Your Angels, Angelic Healing, Angelic Voices, Angel Magi, Angels: An Endangered Species, Meditating with the Angels, and Big George: The Autobiography of an Angel. They range from biblical explanations, like Billy Graham's Angels, to Angels and Aliens-- a little weird to say the least. There is even a special seminar you can attend that, for a price, will help you meet your personal angel and get acquainted with them. Buffet included.

But the writer of Hebrews made a pretty good argument from a different angle. And the point is a contemporary one at that. Why fuss so much over angels if you can have the Son? Why all this attention to the "help"‑‑ the messengers and butlers of God's house‑‑ when you can get to know the Son‑‑ the heir of the House?

Now don't misunderstand. The point is not to demean an angel. (That can be the start of a very bad day.)Angels are delightful, powerful, and wonderful. But in the same room with the Son, they simply fade into the wallpaper. Angels are great, but they exist to glorify the Son and are assigned into our existence only serve and protect us.

I don't know about you, but for me, given the choice, I would much prefer to be "Touched by the Son." Perhaps that will be part of the lineup in the next television season.

What magnificence there is in this proclamation: "In the beginning, O Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain; they will all wear out like a garment. You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end. "To which of the angels did God ever say, "Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet"?

For me, today? I will stick with the Son.

Lord, I thank You for the wonder of every heavenly being that You have created. But Lord, even more I thank You for the gift of Your Son. Let me never lose sight of His glory. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
