Ruth 4

[9] Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people, "Today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech, Kilion and Mahlon. [10] I have also acquired Ruth the Moabitess, Mahlon's widow, as my wife, in order to maintain the name of the dead with his property, so that his name will not disappear from among his family or from the town records. Today you are witnesses!"

The story of Ruth and Naomi and Boaz is a dramatic one. There is a remarkable and powerful moment of redemption that is an image of our redemption by Jesus. As the ceremony concluded there was a bold declaration and commission here. For those who witnessed the redemption of Ruth and Naomi there was a commission that they should stand as witness of this event. There is a similar commission for us in Christ.

We often think of witnessing as trying to convert people to a different religion. In fact, giving witness is simply standing ready to attest to what we have seen and heard. Our commission as a witness calls us to testify when called only to the truth we know and observed in our own lives and in the lives of those near us.

If we are truly Christian, we have experienced the redeeming power of Jesus. We have known the place of Ruth and Naomi. We have known what it is to be in need of grace. We have realized our utter poverty without God and our need for a Redeemer. We can attest to the miracle of redemption. We can attest to the truth of God's transaction. We can attest to the freedom found only in Him. Today you are witnesses!

How is that going? Are you standing ready today in case you are called to the stand? Are you ready to testify in case there is a need? At any moment the Holy Spirit may call you to give testimony as to the way that Jesus has made a difference in your life.

Are you prepared? The Holy Spirit will give you the words necessary. But as Peter put it, "In your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander (1 Peter 3:15-16).

Father God, call me to the stand when You are ready. Bring me before the court. I am witness of Your redeeming power. I will testify of Your unfailing love. I will give witness to Your mercy. I will tell of Your grace and Your love. I am Your witness. Give me the words by Your Spirit. Give me the fruit of Your Spirit. In Jesus' Name.
