John 7
[1] After this, Jesus went around in Galilee, purposely staying away from Judea because the Jews there were waiting to take his life. [2] But when the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles was near, [3] Jesus' brothers said to him, "You ought to leave here and go to Judea, so that your disciples may see the miracles you do. [4] No one who wants to become a public figure acts in secret. Since you are doing these things, show yourself to the world." [5] For even his own brothers did not believe in him.
[6] Therefore Jesus told them, "The right time for me has not yet come; for you any time is right. [7] The world cannot hate you, but it hates me because I testify that what it does is evil. [8] You go to the Feast. I am not yet going up to this Feast, because for me the right time has not yet come." [9] Having said this, he stayed in Galilee. [10] However, after his brothers had left for the Feast, he went also, not publicly, but in secret.

Do you remember the series of financial commercials which depicted a person reacting to an event that had not yet happened such as money falling from the sky, and then missing the actual event? The misstep was then followed by the phrase “Timing is Everything”.
What is true in financial markets is even more true in the things of God such as the unveiling of the Messiah. In God’s plan, timing is everything.
Ever since the healing of the paralytic in Jerusalem a confrontation had been building between Jesus and the religious authorities there. Jesus knew that to rush ahead of God’s plan could be disastrous. He had an appointment in Jerusalem but that was still some time off.
The focus of John’s Gospel is the Passion of Christ. There was other ministry that John was obviously aware of but chose not to record for us. This is likely because these events were already well attested by the other Gospel writers. About six months passed in these few verses as Jesus ministered in Galilee.
When the time for the Feast of Tabernacles arrived in October the brothers of Jesus wanted Him to go to Jerusalem. They realized that the issue of Jesus being the Messiah could not be settled in Galilee. The brothers pushed Jesus to go to the Feast but He was clear in His response. Timing is everything.
Jesus could not make a public entrance into Jerusalem without forcing a confrontation that was not yet scheduled on God’s agenda. Jesus let the brothers go ahead in a public pilgrimage and then followed in secret.
I wonder sometimes how often we run ahead of the Lord’s timing. We live in a culture that screams to us that more is better, faster is a lot better and sooner is even more better! But when we run ahead of the Lord we may get the vision right but the timing wrong. Following the plan of God means listening not only for WHAT God wants us to do but also for WHEN He wants us to do it. Timing is everything.

Father I am listening. I am listening not only for WHAT you what me to do but WHEN you want me to do it. Keep me on Your agenda and plan for my life and ministry. In Jesus’ name.
