Genesis 22
[9] When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. [10] Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. [11] But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, "Abraham! Abraham!"
    "Here I am," he replied.
[12] "Do not lay a hand on the boy," he said. "Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son."
[13] Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. [14] So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, "On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided."
[15] The angel of the Lord called to Abraham from heaven a second time [16] and said, "I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, [17] I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, [18] and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me."
[19] Then Abraham returned to his servants, and they set off together for Beersheba. And Abraham stayed in Beersheba.

There is an old saying that God is always on time. This was one case in point! God was just in time to speak out and rescue Isaac. Why cut it so close? It just had to be so. This was the only way to know for sure that Abraham was trusting wholly in God and not in His own judgment or even his own son for the future.
Was this really a test so that God would know the true faith of Abraham? Yes. But we must realize that God already knew this faith and resolve were there. God knows us better than we know ourselves! But more important, God used this test to show Abraham his own faith.
The test showed Abraham that he completely trusted God. He probably did not know that. This test was even more for Abraham to know than for God to know. In the time of testing, we discover our own faith, and it is strengthened. In the tough times of trial, we find out who we really are and learn our need to depend upon God.
Abraham learned something else on Mount Moriah. He realized that God does provide. God provided a ram as a substitutionary sacrifice in place of Isaac. Abraham could not have fully understood the depth of this image.
One day, about 2000 years later, near this very spot in Jerusalem, a substitutionary atonement would be made for Abraham's sin and for all who trust in the Lord.  God would provide a perfect Lamb to take away the sins of the world.
Abraham named this place Jehovah Jireh or "the Lord will provide". One of the names of God is "I AM provision." I am what you need. I am what you seek. God is our provision and He is on time.
Have you been following God? Have you wondered if God would come through? Have you been seeking God for provision? He will be on time. He will provide.

God, I am following. Reveal Your plan, and Your timing, and Your provision to me. In Jesus' name.
