Exodus 15
[6] "Your right hand, O Lord, was majestic in power.
Your right hand, O Lord, shattered the enemy.
[7] In the greatness of your majesty you threw down those who opposed you.
You unleashed your burning anger; it consumed them like stubble.
[8] By the blast of your nostrils the waters piled up.
The surging waters stood firm like a wall; the deep waters congealed in the heart of the sea.
[9] "The enemy boasted, 'I will pursue, I will overtake them.
I will divide the spoils; I will gorge myself on them. I will draw my sword
and my hand will destroy them.'
[10] But you blew with your breath, and the sea covered them.
They sank like lead in the mighty waters.

The Israelites celebrated the great victory of God. Not their own, but the victory of God.
The worshipping heart will celebrate several things. We celebrate the majesty of creation. We celebrate the Name of God because His Name is declared and exposes the character of God. We celebrate the sheer wonder of God and His deep love for us. We also celebrate the victory of God.
The Israelites had witnessed a powerful and magnificent display of God's power and judgment. This part of the song is not so much gloating as it is a simple declaration of a powerful and undeniable fact.
Poetically, the power of God is personified and described with human, yet superhuman, qualities. With majestic power, the right hand of God shattered the enemy. In greatness and majesty, God threw down the opponents and unleashed burning anger. With the blast of his nostrils, the water piled up. The breath of God blew the arrogance of Israel's enemies away.
Worship is about celebrating victory. The Israelites were learning this. In the future, they would learn to celebrate the triumph of God even before they saw it. Then God would go before them and win each battle. Worship is a celebration of God's faithfulness in the past and future. When we turn our hearts toward God, we may begin with a heavy heart, but the witness of Scripture reveals to us the one true living God who always wins. God always wins His battles. As Paul asked, "If God is for us, who can be against us?" (Romans 8:31)
The greatest act of God's faithful victory is seen in the cross and resurrection. At Calvary, God made flesh, went to battle, and defeated the power of sin and death once and for all. We are no longer enslaved to sin. In His glorious resurrection, God conquered the final enemy and made the way for us each to know and celebrate life. As He did for the Israelites, God has drowned our enemies behind us, and we celebrate this truth in water baptism. Whatever skirmish we may continue to face is a little clean-up exercise in the aftermath of this huge victory. The devil and his cronies are defeated. Our calling is to declare the victory and walk in victory. This is the walk of worship.
Have you been walking in defeat? Don't do it! If you are in Christ, defeat is simply not the truth about you. Draw near to God. Rejoice in His great victory. He has shattered your enemies. He has consumed them like stubble. He has drowned their boasting. Even death has no victory over those who are in Christ Jesus.

Father God, I rejoice in Your victories! I rejoice in what You did for me upon the cross. I celebrate the victory of Your mighty hand. I rejoice in Your victory over my enemies and the great freedom You have won for me. In Jesus' name.
