Ephesians 5

[11] Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. [12] For it is shameful even to mention what the disobedient do in secret. [13] But everything exposed by the Light becomes visible, [14] for it is Light that makes everything visible. This is why it is said: "Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you."

God clarifies that the world is not so much about black and white as it is about Light and darkness.  The primary way that we walk in the Light is by not walking in the darkness.  This may sound obvious, but it is a truth that bears repetition and careful attention.  We are to walk in the Light, and in doing so, we will expose the deeds of darkness as those that do not bear fruit.

The point is not to shine a spotlight on evil as it is, to be honest, and clear in revealing the fruitless nature of disobedient living.  The world tells many lies about how wonderful and delightful it is to walk in disobedience.  The truth is that we reap what we sow, and the darkness in life will only beget more darkness.

The intention here is not to point out or even talk about evil, for it is shameful to mention the secret behaviors of the disobedient.  Rather, the Light of Christ will expose everything and make visible that which is not of Him. This can be the point of awakening for those in the world. This can be the wake-up call that is so desperately needed.  Those who are dead may awaken so that the Light of Christ will shine on them.

Why is this so critical and, at the same time, so wonderful?  Scripture is clear that life is found only in Jesus and that this life is the Light of men. The Light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it (John 1:4-5). The world does not comprehend the Light of Christ.  The world may scream "intolerance," but, in fact, it is the darkness that is intolerant of the Light.  The darkness hates Light.

So where are you walking today?  Are you walking in the Light?  Is the Light of Christ in you causing others to awaken?  Is it causing some to complain?  This is the life in Christ.  Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.

Father God, help my life to be a wake-up call for someone today.  As I walk in the Light of Christ, cause the deeds of darkness to be revealed.  Help me to witness to those who do not know You and have been dead to You.  In Jesus' Name.
