Psalm 134 A song of ascents.
Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord
who minister by night in the house of the Lord.
[2] Lift up your hands in the sanctuary
and praise the Lord.
[3] May the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth,
bless you from Zion.
This last vista may have been the Mount of Olives itself from which there is a dramatic view of the Temple Mount and all that went on there. Breaking the top of the mountain the view must have been literally breathtaking.
It may well be that the Pilgrim to Jerusalem would come over the last vista of the Mount of Olives at night and see the fires and lights burning in the massive Temple. They would rejoice in those who were serving in the Temple even at night. Some of the pilgrims were Levites who had come specifically to serve in the Temple. They would join in the servanthood of the Temple.
The powerful part of our journey here is that genuine anointing leads to unity and to servanthood. The highest place of ascent is service in the House of the Lord. The disciples never seemed to get this as they continued to argue over who would get a throne at the right hand of Jesus.
Jesus would show them that the highest place of spiritual formation occurs when we take a towel to wash the feet of another. We cannot skip to this place. Servanthood without unity will be angry, resentful, and caustic. Servanthood without anointing will be powerless. But Jesus said, if you want to be great in God's Kingdom, you must learn to be the servant of all.
Where are YOU? We are all somewhere along this journey. Perhaps you are at the vista of Psalm 120 where you have never really called out to the Lord. You need to do that today. Or perhaps you need to lift your eyes to Him and discover His power to help and protect you.
One of our problems is that we try to oversimplify the spiritual journey to a few steps. We get saved. Later we seek a blessing or baptism or release of the Holy Spirit. We fail to realize that the journey of faith lasts our lifetime.
There are many vistas. Some we will revisit. Our danger is that we get stuck somewhere. We may get stuck in joy and fail to come to the Lord in humility. We may get stuck on anointing and miss unity. We may never make it to servanthood. We are all in this picture somewhere. The Lord would have us to move on to the next vista of discovering as we move closer to Him and His Kingdom.
Father, thank You for the journey. Thank You for the vistas of the journey. Help me to see that others are not where I am on the trek. Help me to celebrate the place where I am with You. Give me the joy of this moment with You. Help me to find the place of servanthood that You have for me in Your house. In Jesus' name.
