James 3:2-5

We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check.  When we put bits into the mouths of horses to make them obey us, we can turn the whole animal.  Or take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go.  Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.

James has made a powerful point thus far.  Christian faith is more than just talk and more than just belief; it is action.  But now he turns things around.  Words are important, too!

You may act in a Christian manner, but the way you talk is most telling.  We can harness the appetites of the body, reign in evil desire, restrict all manner of sinful possibilities, but the real difficulty is controlling the tongue.

James is not even so concerned with the traditional misuse of the Lord's name.  The concern is in those things we say that are so very powerful for good or evil. And controlling this part of the human-animal is the height of mastery.  It is true.  What we say shapes so much of what goes on around us.

The fact is we have choices.  We can choose either to speak negative possibilities into existence or speak with confidence and hope.  We really do pronounce blessings upon those near to us or curses.  With every word of encouragement and hopeful expectation, we participate with God in bringing the very best out of our family members, co-workers, and church members.  The right word at the right time makes all the difference in the world.  Like the rudder of a ship, the gift of words is a steering force and a responsibility entrusted.

How about it?  Will today be a day of great accomplishment, possibilities, hope, and growing trust?  You can choose to steer it that way.

Lord, I commit my mouth to You this day.  I pray that all I say would be honoring to You.  Speak through me words of hope, encouragement, expectation, and confidence into the lives of those around me.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
