We are starting a series of devotions in the first five chapters of Revelation. I am currently teaching in Revelation 14-22 at Faith Fellowship each weekend. These first chapters in Revelation are powerful devotionally and are among the most applicable in the Bible.

Past and current messages that I have taught in Revelation are available at www.faithfellowshipweb.com

Revelation 1

[4]  John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, [5]  and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful Witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth.

We’ve got more sevens.  Seven churches and Seven spirits. We will hear more about these seven churches of Revelation, all located in Asia Minor. But everything starts with grace and peace that flows to you from the Father on the throne, Jesus the faithful Witness, and the Spirit of God.

The big truth: We will never navigate the days in which we live if we do not start with the One who brings grace and peace. These two words appear many times in the Bible. They always appear in that order. Until the Grace of the Lord flows over you, you will not have peace. Period. Grace always precedes peace. You will not find peace in another place. We will not find it by looking within. We will not find it in a noble cause or political movement. Peace is only found in the work of His Grace in us.

He was before all things. He is the uncreated One. He is the Great I AM. We will hear these reassurances again and again in Revelation. They are the largest and most important truths of our Bible. Though we do not know what tomorrow holds, we know Who holds tomorrow. Because of that, we can rest in His peace.

So, what are these "seven spirits" before His throne? This is a Revelation about the personality and person of the Holy Spirit. We often think of Holy Spirit as an 'it' when, in fact, the Spirit is a person of the Godhead. The NLT renders this “the sevenfold Spirit before his throne.” The text seems to point to seven ways that Holy Spirit approaches or interacts with us at different times.

This description is likely a reference to Isaiah 11:2, which is a Messianic prophecy about Jesus. “And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.”

We often ponder how it is that we actually engage the Spirit. How does Holy Spirit engage with us?  Here we see the nature of the Holy Spirit that Jesus has made available to you. He is a complex friend Who meets us on many levels.

He is the Spirit of the Lord Who anoints us.  Jesus said the Spirit of the Lord has “anointed me to preach Good News…”  He is the source of anointed words and works in your life. He is the Spirit of wisdom Who is beyond the facts of a situation.  He is the Spirit of understanding that we need to connect with people and situations. He is the Spirit of counsel Who gives us the compassion of Christ.  He is the Spirit of power Who gives authority and competence to do things we thought were impossible. He is the Spirit of knowledge Who tells us things we need to know but have no way of discovering. He is the Spirit of the fear of the Lord Who is our constant source of humility and reverence before the Lord.

We often say that Holy Spirit is there to give us what we need or to meet us at our point of need. This is the sevenfold personality of Holy Spirit that meets us specifically.

Thank You, Lord, for You! I give thanks for Your Spirit Who meets me in the needs of daily life and the decisions that matter. Thank You for Your Spirit to guide, comfort, and empower me. Thank You for the perfection of Your friendship with me Your Spirit.
