Revelation 3

[1]  "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars…

Jesus described Himself to the church at Sardis in a way we find in no other place. He spoke of holding seven spirits of God and seven stars.  We understand the seven stars to be the churches of Asia Minor or the churches of the Revelation. Seven is a number of completeness, so He holds all of the true church in His hand. We can thank God for this.

He also described Himself as holding the seven spirits of God. We know that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Deity. So, what is this?  In Revelation, we hear of the seven spirits of God that are before His throne. Many see this as seven ways that Holy Spirit meets us.

The prophet Isaiah spoke of this in the Messianic description of Christ. Isaiah 11:2 – “And the Spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD.” This was one of the Scriptures Jesus was claiming when He declared that the Spirit of the Lord was upon Him and had anointed Him to preach Good News.

The Seven Spirits before His throne are, first of all, the Spirit of the Lord. This is the Holy Spirit who dwells within the believer. When we speak of Jesus living in our heart, He does so by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit then meets us at the point of our need. When we need wisdom, he is the Spirit of wisdom, giving us insight beyond our abilities.  When we need understanding, He is the Spirit of understanding, giving us compassion for a situation that we would not have. When we need counsel, He is the Spirit of counsel, giving us counsel for our lives, insight through Scripture, and words to share with others. When we are weak, He meets us as the Spirit of power, giving us power beyond that weakness. When we don’t know something, He is the Spirit of knowledge, informing us what we need to know or even a word of knowledge for another person. When we are in doubt or diminished in faith, He meets us as the Spirit of fear of the Lord, restoring our reverence before God.

What are you lacking? What are you needing? The failures among believers at Sardis began when they felt self-sufficient. They grew to think that they did not need Lord, or they would call on Him if they ever did. They were self-dependent rather than God-dependent. The truth is that Jesus is always ready to hold you in His hand. He is always ready to meet you at the point of your need.

Father God, keep my mind aware that You are always holding me. Keep my heart aware that You are always prepared to meet me at the point of my need. May the Spirit of the Lord be upon me. In Jesus’ Name.
