Hebrews 5
[4] No one takes this honor upon himself; he must be called by God, just as Aaron was. [5] So Christ also did not take upon himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him,
"You are my Son; today I have become your Father."
[6] And he says in another place, "You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek."So let's get to know our Great High Priest.
His approach is one of humility. Just as a High Priest would not take upon himself this role, Christ did not take upon Himself a place of Glory. He did not begin His priestly functions without an appropriate call from God. He is declared by God to be a priest forever.
Jesus said, "If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me" (John 8:54). It is by the decree of the Father that the Christ is our Great High Priest (Psalm 2:7).
He is not a temporary priest, designated for a term of service like the Levites. Christ is in the order of Melchizedek. Do you remember Melchizedek? He was the priest of God Most High who appeared and blessed Abram just as the King of Sodom was offering Abram a "great deal". Rather than make an alliance with Sodom, Abram received the blessing of Melchizedek and tithed to the priest.
It is interesting that there actually is no such "order", because Melchizedek did not have any ancestors or descendants. He just appeared to Abraham and blessed him. Isn't it interesting that Melchizedek greeted Abram by bringing out bread and wine to offer to him (Genesis 14:18)?
Sound mysterious? He is. He goes before us and appears among us. At the great turning points of life, He is there to offer us the right way to go to offer us bread and wine to offer us blessing and an opportunity to return blessing.
Where will you meet Him today?
Lord, keep my eyes and ears open. Give me grace to see You at the turning points and deciding moments of life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
