1 Peter 2

[4] As you come to him, the living Stone‑‑rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him‑‑ [5] you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. [6] For in Scripture it says:

"See, I lay a stone in Zion,

        a chosen and precious cornerstone,

and the one who trusts in him

will never be put to shame."

There is a family cabin that we enjoy very much in the mountains.  When the cabin was being built, a special call was made to an old man who was famous in those parts.  He was a stonemason.  But not just any stonemason.   He was known to be the very best, a master stonemason.  For years this man had built the most beautiful natural stone fireplaces and walls.  He came to create the chimney and hearth that would be at the center of this cozy retreat.

As he began to work, the stone mason's eyes would move across the stones, judging each piece with years of wisdom.  Sometimes he would gaze and point choosing exactly the stone that was needed for a particular spot.  At other times, the stones were carried up the ladder for him to turn in his hands as the vision in his mind began to take form as a beautiful puzzle of various shapes and sizes.  The result was magnificent, a stone structure that will remain long after the cabin is gone. A pillar of strength that has texture, beauty, and strength.

Peter lets us know that if you are going to build a spiritual house, you might as well call in the best.  God, our Father, is famous in all parts.  He is the master stonemason.  He can put together the rough rocks we call people into a strong and solid structure.  The spiritual house that He builds is made of multidimensional people with depth and texture.

He will often gaze with wise eyes before pointing and calling.  Sometimes he will turn a particular choice in His hands for a while as He finds just the right fit.  Our Father began His construction with the laying of a cornerstone.  Perfectly chosen, Jesus Christ is the cornerstone.  From this perfect choice and upon this foundation, every stone is chosen and fitted.

Do you have any idea how special and unique you are?  You may feel like just another rock in the pile, but the stonemason has His eye on you.  He wants to fit you carefully into His vision. He may turn you a few times in His hands as he prepares to place you carefully but make no mistake about it, the fit will be perfect.

Remember the words of the stonemason-- "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11).

O God, forgive me should I ever resist Your watchful eye.  Turn me gently in your wise and knowing hands.  Place me exactly where You want me to be.  Fit me in with the others.  Build me up from Your perfectly places cornerstone.  In the name of Jesus.
