Hebrews 13
[4] Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.

One of the most vital ways that we honor marriage is by keeping the marriage bed pure.

The marriage bed is a sacred place of intimate communication, fruitful procreation, and delightful recreation between a man and a woman who have committed themselves to one another in the covenant bond of marriage.

God created this special place in our lives as a haven where we can be completely vulnerable and intimate with our spouse. Here, these two people communicate and "know" one another in a physical, emotional, and spiritual intimacy not found anywhere else. This kind of communication is so special and sacred that it is even used to help us understand how God desires to "know" us and for us to know Him.

This sort of communication can only happen in our human frailty when there is a covenant promise that says: "Forsaking all others... I take you... to have and to hold until we are parted by death. "Intimacy can only occur with trust, and trust can only occur with the assurance that the other person will not leave.

So how do I keep the marriage bed pure?

Are you single? If you are a virgin, remain so until you marry. If you have made mistakes in your past, put these behind you and under the forgiving blood of Jesus, and claim a second virginity as a pure child of God in Christ. Did someone hurt you sexually against your will? You are still as pure as the driven snow before God because no one can "take" purity; it can only be given. If you did not give your virginity, you still have it. And remember, God is all about second beginnings.

Are you married? Attend carefully to your marriage and the building of your relationship. Protect AT ALL COST your own purity in the marriage. Guard yourself from impurity. Joseph literally ran away from temptation. This was Paul's counsel to Timothy as well. Jesus cautioned us that even the lust of the eye is adulterous. Guard your affections. Guard the images of your mind and the thoughts of your heart. You know when you are in danger, so cry out for help to a friend, a pastor, or a trusted couple.

There is a war on to steal the purity of your marriage bed. Why? Because it is something your enemy, the Accuser, will be able to throw in your face at every opportunity. Ministries have crumbled, families dissolved, and nations have been thrown into disarray because the marriage bed was not guarded and protected. Do not underestimate the resolve of your enemy to lie to you, cheat you, steal from you, and seek to destroy you.

Lord, I commit myself to walk in purity. Cleanse me now from any unrighteousness in thought, word, or deed. Give me the strength to walk in purity today. I choose to honor marriage through the purity of my marriage bed. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
