Genesis 9
[24] When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, [25] he said, "Cursed be Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers."
[26] He also said, "Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. [27] May God extend the territory of Japheth; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be his slave."
[28] After the Flood Noah lived 350 years. [29] Altogether, Noah lived 950 years, and then he died.

We often wonder why the Canaanites met with repeated destruction as God judged them. The answer is at least partly here. In the process of God’s plan to bless Israel, the Canaanites were condemned and judged by God throughout the Conquest because their activities were in the same pattern and mold as their ancestor Ham.
We see the enslavement of Canaanites in many situations in the history of the Old Testament. We will see the Canaanites defeated and enslaved by eastern kings in chapter 14. Under Joshua, the Gibeonites will become woodchoppers and water carriers for Israel's tabernacle (Joshua 9:27). This enslavement pattern will continue until the Battle of Carthage in 146 B.C., where the Phoenicians, who were Canaanites, are finally defeated.
Noah’s words are more of a general prophecy than a specific prediction. The line of Shem will be blessed, and the line of Ham in Canaan will be cursed. The Canaanites would have to be dispossessed from their place by Israel under Joshua in order for blessing to come on Shem. And the Japhethites would come to dwell in the tents of Shem. This means that the Japhethites would live with the Shemites on friendly terms, not that the Japhethites would dispossess the Shemites.
These verses actually set the foundation for Israel’s foreign policy in the land as outlined in Deuteronomy 20:16-18. "However, in the cities of the nations the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance, do not leave alive anything that breathes. [17]  Completely destroy them--the Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Perizzites, Hivites and Jebusites--as the LORD your God has commanded you. [18]  Otherwise, they will teach you to follow all the detestable things they do in worshiping their gods, and you will sin against the LORD your God."
As a devotional reflection, we need to clearly understand that God is sovereign in all these judgments and directives. We also need to see that the effect of sin is wide-reaching. The consequence of rebellious disobedience ripples across the ages to the descendants in generations to come. Galatians 6:7 - Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.

Father God, keep my focus upon You and you alone. Help me to see that the only way toward blessing is to pursue You and Your ways. Keep me from the place of mocking. Keep me from the place of rebellion. In Jesus' name.
