Romans 2
[12] All who sin apart from the Law will also perish apart from the Law, and all who sin under the Law will be judged by the Law. [13] For it is not those who hear the Law who are righteous in God's sight, but it is those who obey the Law who will be declared righteous. [14] (Indeed, when Gentiles, who do not have the Law, do by nature things required by the Law, they are a law for themselves, even though they do not have the Law, [15] since they show that the requirements of the Law are written on their hearts, their consciences also bearing witness, and their thoughts now accusing, now even defending them.) [16] This will take place on the day when God will judge men's secrets through Jesus Christ, as my gospel declares.

Suppose for a moment that you are driving down a desolate stretch of highway.  No one is around.  The road is safe, so you begin to go faster and faster.  You failed to notice earlier postings of the legal speed limit, and now you look and see no one, so you push it a little more.  You are going about 90 mph when you flash past the blur of a trooper in your peripheral vision.
You know the drill. Blue lights. License and registration.  The whole bit.  So you plead your case to the guy in mirrored glasses.  Does it really make any difference that you were unaware of the posted limit?  Why should it?  You knew you were speeding whether you knew the specifics or not.  You knew that you were wrong, if not by how much.  It really does not matter if the limit was 50 mph or 70 mph; you are going to get a yellow slip of paper.
Now suppose that you knew the limits in the area.  You saw the last sign, and you knew exactly the posted limit, but you chose to push it.  You calculate how much you think you can "get away with" on this road.  You carefully figure how much you can push the limit.  You may even reason that out in the wide-open spaces, such things should not matter, and the troopers probably don't enforce as strictly.  Same blue lights.  Same drill.  You still get the yellow slip of paper, and you are judged according to a law of which you are aware.
It really does not matter if you are oblivious to the limit or carefully aware of the limit.  When you are over the limit, you are over the limit.
The same is true with God's Law.
Apart from grace, are we any better off because we have the Law?  Will God judge the religious who know the Law with leniency?  Is there "special consideration" for those who are "insiders"?  Quite the contrary.  Because of the many things humanity can know about God from within themselves and from creation, no one is without excuse.  Everyone should know better than to sin.  In fact, those with more access to the truth will be judged more strictly, not less, than those without.  There is no "inside track".  And those who sin apart from the Law will perish apart from the Law.
There is no "leniency."  No "special consideration."  No "insiders."  Just sinners in need of His grace.  Some are more aware of that need because of the Law; others less aware because they lack it.

Lord, I am a sinner in need of Your grace.  I have no reason to look down upon anyone.  I rejoice in the knowledge that You have saved me.  I give thanks for your grace.  In Jesus' name.  Amen.
