1 John 2
[24] See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father. [25] And this is what he promised us, even eternal life. [26] I am writing these things to you about those who are trying to lead you astray. [27] As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you do not need anyone to teach you. But as his anointing teaches you about all things and as that anointing is real, not counterfeit, just as it has taught you, remain in him.
Do you remember growing up in grade school? It seemed like every class had a "teacher's pet." The "teacher's pet" was the kid who seemed to get extra attention from the teacher. The "pet" was the one who sat closest to the teacher's desk and had to have the answers to all the questions.
But also, the "teacher's pet" was that one child the teacher seemed to make sure would understand the lesson, no matter what. The teacher's pet was also very eager to please the teacher, offering to do little things like clean the chalkboard or clap the erasers. For me, it was always annoying because it was obvious that there could only be one, or maybe just a few, teacher's pets.
John seems to suggest that something similar but different occurs in the classroom of the Spirit. When we struggle to understand God's truth, and especially when there are bad or confusing teachings floating about, there is a special teacher for us. The anointing of God's Holy Spirit is our very best teacher when all else is confusing.
That doesn't mean that we do not ever need to learn from others, but there is a witness within us to the Truth as we study God's Word. He gives us special attention, making certain to attend to our understanding and special needs. He will stay after class to help us.
Do you remember how Jesus, Truth Himself, opened the meaning of the Scripture to the two who walked on the road to Emmaus such that their hearts burned within them (Luke 24:27)? He explained all of the events that had happened during Passion Week in Jerusalem according to Scripture. Jesus did the same thing with the Disciples in the Upper Room (Luke 24:45).
The anointing of God's Holy Spirit points out errors and highlights Truth as we are grounded in the Word. That anointing of the Holy Spirit is our teacher; we are the "Teacher's pet" as we remain in a right relationship with the Lord. The great thing is that this close relationship to the teacher, the Holy Spirit, is not limited to a few "pets." We are all a teacher's pet in this classroom as we remain in Him.
Lord, I want to sit close to Your anointing today, attentive to Your Truth and leading. Open the Word to my understanding. Bear witness in my spirit to the Truth and point out errors to me. I am so glad to be the teacher's pet. Is there anything I can do for You? Amen.
