1 Peter 3

       [1] Wives, in the same way be submissive to your husbands so that, if any of them do not believe the word, they may be won over without words by the behavior of their wives, [2] when they see the purity and reverence of your lives.

   

       Wives and husbands.  Submission.  Some will say that putting those words together in our modern time sounds a bit Neanderthal. Or, as Belle (“Beauty and the Beast”) responded to Gaston’s dream of a submissive wife, “You are positively primeval.”

       But we must also recognize that submission is a powerful word in the story of the Gospel. Submission reflects one of the most powerful tools in a Christ-like character. Wherever we end up, we must consider the larger context of Scripture. 

       In his letter to the Ephesians, the Apostle Paul prefaced this oft-quoted statement regarding submission of wives with this: "Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord" (Eph. 5:21
