Galatians 6

[10] Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people,

This is an interesting bit of advice.  In our modern, fast-paced way of thinking we could hear it sort of like-- If you have a chance, try to help others. That is rather bland, don't you think?  But in reality, there is much more to this verse. Much more.

The word Paul used here is the same as that in v. 9 translated "for at the proper time, we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”  The Greek word kairos speaks of a unique point in time for a specific occurrence.  The kairos for a particular event occurs only once before it is lost forever. That moment will never be available again.

There is a kairos "fullness of time" for harvest and a kairos for sowing-- doing a specific good. No one can hope to reap the harvest before the time appointed for it by God.  But if one does not seize the time appointed for sowing, he will reap no harvest at all!  It is all part of God's plan.

There is an appointed time for doing good to all people.  That time is not all at once, but instead there is an appointed time for doing good that reaches out among all people.  There are opportunities that God has planned and designed for us to do good toward the people we encounter.  These are not "random acts of kindness," though they may appear that way.  They are, in fact, God-ordained opportunities carefully woven into His plan.  I call them God-moments.

What is most interesting is that the opportunities we may be tempted to overlook as unimportant may be the ones most useful to God.  Have you ever done some simple act that seemed trivial to you, only to find out later that it was a huge answer to prayer in the life of another?  Sometimes a simple greeting is the very sign that a person has been praying for to signal that God is hearing their prayers and truly cares about them! A word of encouragement can save a life.  A tiny gift redirects the course of a family.

There are other larger acts, still not enormous, yet they make an enormous difference.  We may find that a gift to a ministry or missionary, though not large, is the exact answer to a prayer and a great encouragement to that person.  A simple act of service, in response to the Spirit, at just the right time, can sometimes be the very things that God uses to keep a person from quitting their calling or abandoning their efforts.  A phone call or card when God has put someone upon your heart can be the very thing that keeps them above water.

These are genuinely the God-moments.  These are intersections of love and life that have an eternal impact if we are listening and obedient.  Such moments are found throughout the story of God's love in the Scripture-- the little boy who gave his lunch so that 5000 could eat, the mom who packed that lunch, the man who offered his donkey upon request so that Jesus could ride into town, or the man who offered to carry water through town rather than his wife so that the Disciples could follow him to the Upper Room.  There are so many if we read with an eye open.

There are also so very many God-moments all around us if we will watch with an open eye.  Jesus asked: Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest (John 4:35).  Watch for the God-moment.  Don't just seize the day; Seize the moment. Seize the God-moment.

Dear Father, open my eyes to the God-moments You have planned for me today.  Open my eyes to see people as You see them-- their real needs and the things that make a difference.  Tune my ear to Your voice so that I may hear clearly the opportunity You have for me to make a difference I may never see.  In Jesus' Name.
