Hebrews 10
[11] Day after day, every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. [12] But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God. [13] Since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool, [14] because by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy. [15] The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says: [16] "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds." [17] Then he adds: "Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more." [18] And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin.
We often recite the phrase about Jesus, seated at the right hand of the Father. Here we find the powerful meaning of that phrase. This was not just a phrase concerned with the majesty of Christ in the heavenly realm; it is a statement of completion.
What did the High Priest Jesus accomplish for you that no other priest could ever do? Jesus completed once and for all the requirements of the sacrificial system. Jesus completed the Old Covenant, established the New Covenant, and sat down. Sitting signifies the conclusion of the job.
This is in contrast to the old Levitical priesthood. Levite priests could never sit down on the job since their sacrificial services were never completed. But Christ's sitting at the right hand of God is both a signal that His sacrifice was offered for all time and also that He can now confidently await final victory over His enemies.
The phrase "for all time" is translated as "forever" in verse 14. The Writer made it clear that by the single sacrifice of Jesus, we are made holy before God. This is in contrast to the many sacrifices offered by the priests day after day, again and again. The completed work of Christ has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
We don't want to misunderstand the phrase "are being made holy". It sounds like a continuing process. But the force of the expression "made holy" conveys a completed act. A better rendering might be "them who are sanctified". Those who are sanctified are not perfect in their actions, but they have a status in God's presence that is "perfect" in the sense that they approach Him with the full acceptance gained through the death of Christ.
Is God still working on us? Is there stuff to be cleaned up? Absolutely. But when we come before Him, we approach as a person declared holy. When we come to worship Him, there is no one who is more holy than another. The only holiness is that which He has paid for and declared.
This is all a fulfillment of prophecy concerning the New Covenant. The Writer quoted a portion of Jeremiah 31:33-34, giving testimony by God's Holy Spirit. Final forgiveness, such as the New Covenant promised, means that there is no further need for any sacrifice for sin.
Have you received that forgiveness? Have you received the New Covenant? Or are you working under some modification of the Old Covenant? Are you laboring under a modification of the sacrificial system?
Hear the Good News: "This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds. Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more. And where these have been forgiven, there is no longer any sacrifice for sin."
Father God, thank You for the work of my high priest Jesus. Thank You for completing in Him all that is necessary for the forgiveness of my sin. Thank You for the New Covenant in His blood. Put Your laws in my heart and write Your ways on my mind. In Jesus' Name, Amen.
