1 Peter 5

[12] With the help of Silas, whom I regard as a faithful brother, I have written to you briefly, encouraging you and testifying that this is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.  [13] She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark. [14] Greet one another with a kiss of love.   Peace to all of you who are in Christ.

Do you ever stay to watch the credits?   At the end of a movie or television show, they always run a long list of all the people who made the production possible.  Sometimes the names fly by so fast that you cannot even see them.  But often, I find myself in awe of how many people work on a project.  I have found myself wondering, now who was the “grip”?  And what does the “grip” do anyway?  And why is the “best boy” the best boy?

Peter concludes his wonderful letter to Christians with, well, some credits. Of course, Peter has just given all power and glory to the Lord. Jesus is the Producer and Director.  Absolutely.  But Peter reminds us that he did not work alone in this endeavor.  He worked through many that He called.  So, roll the credits.

There was Silas.  He has been here all along with us.  He was the scribe or secretary who actually wrote down this marvelous letter of encouragement.  Peter was probably not schooled in the art of writing. Still, this transformed fisherman had a powerful firsthand grasp of the Gospel and the issues at stake when persecution comes.  Without Silas, however, those ideas might have been lost forever.  Silas crafted the words and thoughts that expressed the heart of Peter under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.

"She who is in Babylon" probably refers to the Christian church in Rome from which Peter wrote.  I don't know of any significant writer, teacher, musician, or pastor with a broader ministry who is not deeply indebted to a community of faith, a local church.  It may be a community of faith from a long time ago or one that prays regularly for us day to day. These are the people who encourage and pray and support us.

John Mark was another scribe or secretary.  Early in his Christian experience, he might have quit altogether because Paul was so discouraging with him.  But Barnabas saw the potential in John Mark and encouraged him.  The Gospel of Mark was written by John Mark to convey the first-hand knowledge and witness of Peter.

         Peter needed all these people.

The truth is we all have a Silas, a John Mark, and a church family that we need to be grateful for.  We all have people who help us, support us, and encourage us.  We cannot afford to forget these people.

So, roll your own credits.  Is there someone you need to give thanks for today?  Someone you need to express love to?  Someone you need to express peace to?  Is there a local church you are indebted to?  A small group that has stood behind you?  Why not drop a note or give a call?

Lord Jesus, thank you for the people You have put into my life to help me.  Thank you for those who give aid.  Thank you for my church family.  Send your peace to those who are in Christ.  Amen.
