Galatians 1

[1] Paul, an apostle--sent not from men nor by man, but by Jesus Christ and God the Father, who raised him from the dead-- [2] and all the brothers with me, To the churches in Galatia: [3] Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, [4] who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, [5] to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

We often get the idea that the rescue Jesus brought was about something in the future.  Of course we realize that we are saved from a future hell and damnation, and indeed that is good.  Well, really, really good.  But Paul was very clear that it is by the grace of the Lord Jesus that we are rescued from this present evil age.  We are rescued from present peril, and we are saved for present service.  This is the will of our God and Father.

The saving work of Jesus is for today, not tomorrow.  The saving work of Jesus starts today, not tomorrow.  The day of salvation is always today.  The necessary rescue is something we desperately need today, not in the future.  There are threats to the very peace and that Jesus came to give us.  There are threats to our grace walk with Him.  There are those who would pull us away from God demanding that we submit ourselves to one form of religion or another rather than enjoy the wonder of His grace.

This was the task of the Apostle Paul not long after his first missionary journey.  The letter to the Galatians is a plea from the heart of one whom Jesus had taken hold of powerfully.  He was a "sent one."  He was an Apostle, not from men or approved by man, but from Jesus and the Father who raised Jesus from the dead.  This was the heart-cry of Paul who had tried all the religion there was to try.  Don't settle.  Don't go back.  Don't be seduced by the religion or the temptation of this evil age.

In this very earliest of Paul's writings, he wasted no time in getting to the point.  There are no niceties here.  No sweet greetings.  In fact, we will find some of the strongest language of the New Testament right here.  Paul was not messing around.  Too much was at stake.  Grace and peace to you from the one who gave himself for our sins and for our rescue.  No past tense.  No future tense.  Jesus is here for the rescue.

The real question is quite simple.  Have you been rescued?  Have you taken the rope?  Have you taken hold of the life-ring?  Have you grasped the grace that has reached out to grasp you?  There is nothing more important.  Nothing is more critical.  Your rescuer is here.

Father God, thank You for reaching out to me in the person of Jesus.  Thank You for rescuing me.  Give me Your grace and Your peace.  In the Name of Jesus. Amen.
