Genesis 41
When two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream: He was standing by the Nile, [2] when out of the river there came up seven cows, sleek and fat, and they grazed among the reeds. [3] After them, seven other cows, ugly and gaunt, came up out of the Nile and stood beside those on the riverbank. [4] And the cows that were ugly and gaunt ate up the seven sleek, fat cows. Then Pharaoh woke up.
[5] He fell asleep again and had a second dream: Seven heads of grain, healthy and good, were growing on a single stalk. [6] After them, seven other heads of grain sprouted--thin and scorched by the east wind. [7] The thin heads of grain swallowed up the seven healthy, full heads. Then Pharaoh woke up; it had been a dream.
[8] In the morning his mind was troubled, so he sent for all the magicians and wise men of Egypt. Pharaoh told them his dreams, but no one could interpret them for him.
[9] Then the chief cupbearer said to Pharaoh, "Today I am reminded of my shortcomings. [10] Pharaoh was once angry with his servants, and he imprisoned me and the chief baker in the house of the captain of the guard. [11] Each of us had a dream the same night, and each dream had a meaning of its own. [12] Now a young Hebrew was there with us, a servant of the captain of the guard. We told him our dreams, and he interpreted them for us, giving each man the interpretation of his dream. [13] And things turned out exactly as he interpreted them to us: I was restored to my position, and the other man was hanged."

Pharaoh's vivid dreams are a critical part of the story of God's mercy and redemption. Through these dreams, given by God to a pagan ruler, the people of God will ultimately be saved from starvation. But there is also a close up interaction to consider that concerns the chief cupbearer.
The cupbearer said to Pharaoh, "Today I am reminded of my shortcomings." He suddenly remembered the commitment he had made to the man who had encouraged him by interpreting his dream.
The Hebrew word for "reminded" means to "be caused to be mindful" or "to mention." It was more than just the issue of Pharaoh's dream that caused the cupbearer to speak up. He was caused to be mindful. It was mentioned to him.
The word for shortcomings means faults, sins, or crimes. More than just being reminded of something he forgot, the cupbearer was convicted of the sinfulness of his neglect. He had made a commitment to Joseph to remember him to the Pharaoh when he got out of prison. But he had neglected that commitment.
In essence, the cupbearer said, "My crime of omission has been mentioned to me." He had been convicted of a subtle but painful sin, neglecting a personal commitment.
Have you ever noticed that sins of omission are the most difficult to track. Sins of commission are easy. We do not have to spend much time before the Lord before we are reminded of the sins we have committed. These sins are easily tracked. They create vivid and painful memories.
But what about the sins of omission? These are the things we simply miss because we are distracted or too busy. These are the people God wanted us to notice, but we were moving too fast. These are the opportunities to love that we completely miss. These are the rushed commitments that we fail to follow through on. Even with great diligence to follow through we will likely miss some things.
The point here is not to beat up on ourselves because of all the things we have not done or all the tasks left uncompleted. My goodness, we would be here forever! The point here is to listen. Listen when the Lord "mentions" something to you. Listen when the Lord "reminds" you of someone. Listen when the Lord "causes you to be mindful" of a neglected person or relationship.
The call here is not to scour the memory to try and recall every good intention we have failed to complete. But we can start this day listening. After telling God the needs of our day, perhaps we could listen for what is on His mind for us and then respond to what He mentions.

Dear God, is there something you wanted to remind me of?
In Jesus' name.
